DSU Researcher Discovers Correlation Between Songbird Species and Hurricane Predictions

published peer-reviewed paper by a DSU researcher of Veery songbird species migrations may provide meteorologists


another way to


predict the severity of oncoming hurricane seasons.


Dr. Christopher Heckscher, associate professor of environmental


sciences in the


College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, has published new findings that the length of the annual Veery breeding season when they migrate to South America as well as the number of eggs they produce


are predictors of hurricane season severity the following summer and fall.


Dr. Heckscher’s findings are included in his article “A Nearctic-Neotropical Migratory Songbird’s Nesting Phonology and Clutch Size are Predictors of Accumulated


Cyclone Energy,”

Knowles-Carter announces the eight recipients of the Homecoming Scholars Award for the 2018-2019 academic year.


The Homecoming Scholars


Award Program for 2018-2019 is a merit program and was announced in April. It is the second scholarship merit program from Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and BeyGOOD. The Formation Scholars Award Program was announced in the spring of 2017 and was open to female students across a variety of studies.
