How to care for your new tattoo Y
ou did it!! So… you went through with it and you are now the proud owner of a
tattoo. Perhaps you will become a collec- tor – they are very addictive! Your tattoo is fresh, and you now need to
take very good care of it to ensure proper healing. Here are a few tips for tattoo aftercare. Not caring for your tattoo could be detri- mental to the healing process. When your artist is done
tattooing you, he wi ll put a thin layer of petroleum jelly on it and cover it with a bandage, then send you on your merry way. The rest of the healing process is in your hands. Keep the bandage on over-
night. You don’t want to in- troduce things like dead skin, germs, or even pet hair on your new tattoo (trust me, I’ve seen it). Besides, your fresh tattoo may even stain your bedsheets. When you wake up in the morning,

carefully remove the bandage and get in the shower. Do not let the shower spray directly hit your tattoo – instead, gently splash water on the tattoo and run your hand softly over it. We recommend using a fragrance-free soap, free of alcohol. Once clean, pat the tattoo dry with a
CLEAN towel, and don’t cover it back up. For the first few days, you don’t need to
do anything to your tattoo except keep it clean, dry and out of the way. After a few days, you will start to notice a scab form- ing. It will likely be itchy and dry. DO NOT scratch it or pick at it, otherwise you risk pulling out some of the ink (and your tat- too artist can tell if you’ve been picking!!) To relieve the itch, you can put coconut oil on it, or a fragrance and alcohol-free lotion of your choice. It can take up to a month for the scab to heal completely, don’t rush

it, let your body do its job. If the itch is unbearable, try patting it, or gently slap- ping it to relieve it. Depending on what you do for a living,
you may have to use precautionary meas- ures to keep your tattoo safe. For example, if you work in a field that involves physical labor, it may be a good idea to wait until you have holidays or seasonal layoffs to
get a tattoo. I have seen horror stories with a healing
tattoo – one being a mechanic reaching into a bucket of gasoline to retrieve some parts. I can’t even imagine the pain level in that move, but also, as you can imagine, it negatively affected the tattoo’s healing process. A few other things to avoid during the
healing process are hot tubs and pools (please don’t submerge your tattoo), soaking in the bath, and direct sunlight (no tanning!). Stick to these tips and you should end
up with a beautifully healed tattoo. Most shops offer touch-ups once tattoos are healed, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with your artist.
