It might not be quite as intuitive as GarageBand, but it makes up for it in offering features typically found on more expensive soſtware. Of special interest to music edu- cators is a ‘Teacher’s Guide’ that provides thorough lesson plans organized by grade level and topic. Te (free) guide is available here: http://download.acoustica.com/mixcraſt-8- teachers-guide/Mixcraſt_8_Teachers_Guide.pdf

Figure was created specifically for ease-of-use and for mo- bile phone platforms. It is built around three instruments: drums, bass, and a lead synthesizer. Users create music by sliding their finger along the ‘play-pad’ area of the screen. To create drum beats, one simply ‘drums’ on the screen. Automatic quantizing and key ‘locks’ are helpful assistive tools. Aspects of rhythm, range, and pitch can be adjusted incrementally as needed. Te platform allows sharing, and collaborating with users around the world.

Ableton Live is a digital audio workstation that has been designed both for studio music creation and live perfor- mances. Users can operate within traditional timeline view (similar to GarageBand/Logic) or generate ideas in the ‘session view’. Te latter is a particularly effective way to experiment and improvise with different layers, beats, and effects. Ableton users have access to ‘Splice’, a web platform that allows them to store projects (unlimited space), track revisions, share, and collaborate with local and international users.

App-Based Music Creation Soſtware Composer’s Sketchpad

• Link: http://composerssketchpad.com • Platform: Apple iOS only • Pricing: o Lite: Free o Full: $3.99

Composer’s Sketchpad takes an interesting, slightly experi- mental approach to music creation. It combines aspects of a staff paper and sketchbook. Using touch gestures (or an Ap- ple pencil), the user can sketch individual notes, a sweeping melody, or blocked chords. Te ability to ‘grab’ the ‘paper’ and move it around using ‘pinch and zoom’ gestures is intuitive and useful. Te drawing motion allows for a degree of pitch bending which is not as easily accessible on similar offerings. Te ability to turn ‘snap’ to time/pitch functions on and off allow the user to switch between ‘natural’ or precision modes.
