Craft cideries in market share comfort zone


They’re finding success without having to fight for competitive edge. By Susan McIver


F


or several years cider has been recognized as the fastest growing segment of the alcohol beverage industry in North America. The global market for cider is projected to reach $13.8 million US by 2024 with the fruit-rich regions of B.C. reaping their share.


The six craft cideries in the South Okanagan and Similkameen valleys — Summerland Heritage, Dominion, Nomad, Howling Moon, Faustino and Twisted Hills — are each following their own path to success.


The market is expanding fast enough to accommodate the new cideries without ‘stiff’ competition, according to Kaylan Madeira.


Madeira is the cider maker at Twisted Hills in Cawston which she owns with


husband Jo Schneider. “I believe the growth we are seeing is bringing a new appreciation for cider. When we opened our tasting room in 2013 many of our customers were asking ‘What exactly is craft cider?’ ” she said.


“Craft cider contains 95 per cent juice, does not use concentrates or add sugar and is not diluted with water. And it’s usually made on the same farm where the apples are grown and is often a family-run business,” Kate Durisek explained.

Kate and husband Nik Durisek own Howling Moon Craft Cider in Oliver. Currently, most customers who visit Twisted Hills have already sampled numerous craft ciders.


“They are starting to find choice in their quest for cider,” Madeira said. That choice is growing by leaps and bounds.


A completely natural, single variety Spartan cider, True at First Light, made by Dominion Cider in Summerland, won Best Specialty Cider out of the 36


“We started this with Spartan juice and wild fermented it using the traditional French keeve method and natural yeasts, slowly over seven months,” said Mike Harris, who owns Dominion with two former university friends.


Like most craft cideries, Dominion started with a blend of cider and dessert apples and subsequently expanded its offerings.
