The Fortescue House Club & The Braunton Venue
The Fortescue House Club is a members social Club in Wrafton Road just along from the recreation park in the centre of Braunton. The Club has been in existence in its current form in Wrafton Road since 1968 which makes this year the 50th anniversary of its formation. The Club was originally a snooker club using a room in the Agricultural Inn. After a few years it became obvious that a more permanent arrangement was required. When Fortescue House became available for purchase with the village bobby, Sgt Owen ‘Ossie’ Osbourne at the forefront a group of village business men set about purchasing the premises and The Fortescue House Club was established; it opened its doors on the 12th July 1968.
Over the years there have been several alterations and improvements to the building – most notably the extensions for the skittle alley at the side, the dedicated Snooker Room at the rear of the building for the two full sized snooker tables and the function room at the front.
Inside the Club, in the main bar area, we have facilities for skittles, pool, darts, shoveha’ppny and of course the snooker room, all of which are available for members use; also in the main bar there is a comfortable lounge area with a television. Membership of the Club is always available.
The most recent change was the re-naming of the function room to ‘The Braunton Venue’; at the same time the licence was changed to allow non-members access to our entertainment and events and to hire the room for private parties. The room has its own bar, raised stage with spotlights and dance floor and is fully independent from the main bar area. It is available for hire for private functions and catering can be provided if required.
On SATURDAY 18th AUGUST we are holding an Open Day, see previous page and our Facebook pages, when we hope that many of you who may not have visited us or heard of us before will come along and take a look for yourselves – you will be made most welcome.
