The Mussel Project cuts marine pollution Working in co-operation with the Akua Group and Dokuz Eylül University Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology Department of Marine Technology, Çeşme Marina in Turkey is helping to clean seawater through the use of mussels. The marina has a capacity of 400 berths afloat and space for 100 boats on land. It is increasing the number of

mussels living inside the marina’s waters in an attempt to cut down on aquatic pollution and improve the quality of the water. Mussels are known to filter the water around them when searching for phytoplanktons to eat. Research shows that one mussel can filter 150 litres water per day depending on its type and local environmental conditions. During the first phase of the

project, Çeşme Marina secured a total of 80 sacks of Mediterranean mussels in strategic locations. Professor Doctor Gökdeniz Neşer and his team from Dokuz Eylül University will check the ratio of heavy metals inside the mussels regularly and will publish an academic report after one year.

High-spec pontoons for Ocean Village Marina A programme of refurbishment and extension at MDL’s Ocean Village Marina in Southampton has been undertaken by Walcon Marine Ltd. This has been a major project with Walcon involved from the outset in the design of the new layout before manufacturing the new pontoons whilst removing the old infrastructure. This had been there for many years and has now been replaced in a phased programme running

alongside the installation of the new units. A key feature of the new marina is the introduction of a Pier P. The P stands for platinum and is intended for higher-paying clients. Walcon has designed and built customised, high-spec pontoons that feature underdeck services rather than pedestals, branded cleats and smart services using keypads and mobiles.

Livart Marine active in UAE Three more projects were recently completed by Livart Marine in the United Arab Emirates. These include: floating concreate

pontoons and a gangway at Al Rams, Ras Al Khaimah; aluminium gangway and pontoons equipped with Rolec electricity/water service pedestals at Dibba, Fujairah; and a 35 metre aluminium gangway for Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

Foodfest docks at London marina The London Restaurant Festival takes place in the capital’s best restaurants across the city and this year, St. Katharine Docks alongside Tower Bridge has been selected to join the amazing line-up. Now in its tenth year, the Festival will host 60 events across London, with three taking place at the marina. There will be a Restaurant Hopping Tour, on 3 and 11 October, featuring Bravas Tapas, Dokke, Emilia’s Crafted Pasta, Kilikya and White Mulberries. This is a good way to visit five of St. Katharine Docks best-loved restaurants in one day for just £45. On 19 October, there will be a

Tasting Menu at Dokke, consisting of a four-course specially-designed meal at this acclaimed British- Asian fusion restaurant costing £55.
