Social media, web sites and all that jazz!

Several landmarks have been achieved in the past few weeks. The IIMS web site welcomed its 500,000 unique visitor since launch, quite an achievement for an organisation numbering 1,000 members. The home page of the web site has also been given a makeover, including some new striking slider images and a redesigned central information panel, making it even easier for people to navigate their way around.

In the same month the IIMS LinkedIn channel and feed welcomed its 2000th follower. This channel is becoming increasingly

important as a means to disseminate news and Institute information to surveyors and the wider maritime sector. Join free and follow the IIMS discussion group on LinkedIn at https://bit.ly/1Y2xZGk.

And, when did you last have a look at the IIMS YouTube channel? There are now over 130 unique videos, which have been recorded at various IIMS training events, seminars and conferences. Access the YouTube channel here: https:// bit.ly/2c7Vpuz.

IIMS has offered a web site building service for some time and over the past couple of years has prepared and launched half a dozen sites for member surveyors. This service is still available and a six page site with a year’s web hosting thrown in is available for £525 +VAT. All you need to do is to provide some copy! If this is of interest, please contact Dave Parsons in the first instance by email at info@iims.org.uk.

Small Craft Surveyors Forum seminar report The Small Craft Surveyors Forum met at the Seawork workboat show in Southampton on the afternoon of 4th

July. The event, which attracted an audience of nearly 80 delegates with standing room only, was hailed a great success.

Trevor Blakeley, CEO of RINA, was on hand to welcome delegates and open proceedings. In a slight change to the running order, he introduced Paul Johnston from Euro Marine Surveys first, who spoke eloquently on tonnage measurement, including how to calculate load line length and breaks. Delegates listened intently and by the end of the presentation were left in no doubt that simplified tonnage measurement is anything but simple!

Next to speak was Richard Franklin, Braemar Yacht Services. His topic? Challenges for 24m plus vessel surveyors and mini ISM Code. His presentation gave those present a glimpse into the enticing and challenging world of superyacht surveying. However, he cautioned it because of the complexity of the survey and the knowledge required, advised surveyors to group their specialisms and to approach the assignment together and not single handed.

The afternoon concluded with what turned out to be a lively panel discussion, chaired by Mike Schwarz and supported by a panel of Nick Gladwell, Hugo Morgan-Harris and Richard Linford. Over the best part of an hour, the panel discussed everything from

surveyor

accreditation, to standards, how to acquire new skills, continuing professional development the

and importance of mentoring

with timely interventions and comment from the audience.
