SUMMER GAME family fun

a chance for

Jim McDonald Dealer Principal

BY GREG PRICE Taber Times

T

he Southern Alberta Summer Games is truly a fami- ly affair and as you tour the Games’ history in recent years, you see many names that make the Games come quickly together.

One of those is the Holst family whose reach has been on a

participation, volunteering and sponsoring level. “I’d say we’ve been involved in the last eight Games, with the

heaviest participation when it is here,” said Ken Holst, the patri- arch of the family. “We’ve done the sponsorship shirts the last four times it has been hosted by Taber. Locally, it’s great to rub shoulders with many people in Taber and many people from the area as they come into Taber. From a business perspective, it’s great to bring more people into town. From a participation aspect, it’s great to see athletes come together.” Holst added he feels some momentum is being lost in sport

from a participation level. Those reasons can be many, includ- ing cost in which the Games offers a very cheap option for families to come together to enjoy the bonding that sport pos- sesses. “My family is a big advocate of sport and what it does for life

skills. There are rising costs, but even within the schools it doesn’t seem to have the focus it once did. Maybe certain pro- grams aren’t available or taking other avenues that are avail- able,” said Holst. “You can learn the ups and downs of sports and competing with winning and losing, and the skills you learn with coaching. There’s team building and skills you learn for everyday-life. Not everyone finishes first in life and there are things that are hard in life and you learn that in sport. Whether it’s an individual or a team sport, there are ups and downs, highs and lows like there are in life.” And beyond the medal finishes that are available at the

Southern Alberta Summer Games, Holst added he likes how the open participation level can simply make an individual push themselves. “It’s a great way to improve yourself as a person. You can set

personal goals to get personal bests. Especially at a younger age, as these kids learn that, it’s a great thing to have and do,” said Holst. Over years, double-digit Holst family members have partici-

pated in the Games over three generations. “There is everything from hard events like track and field that

would be taxing on your body to cribbage where anyone can sit down and play. I love that about the Summer Games, is that it’s all inclusive and isn’t exclusive to just the elite athlete,” said Holst. “You can push yourself to whatever level you want. The focus for the Games is family participation.” Participation levels have always been high for the Taber and

M.D. of Taber regions for the Games who have also proved gra- cious hosts over the years since the first Southern Alberta Summer Games back in 1970. Taber/M.D. of Taber have hosted the Games in 1977, 1989, 2005, 2008, 2013 and 2018. “It’s great to see that we have the trust from the Southern

Alberta Summer Games association to award us these Games, more so than I think other communities in southern Alberta. That says a lot about the town and the job that we are doing,” said Holst. “It’s a great human experience with everyone com- ing together. It’s doesn’t matter who you are or what you believe, sport has a way of bringing people together, and that’s what I love about it for my family and for others.” The Holst family have been heavily involved over the years in

3-on-3 basketball, soccer, track and field and three and five kilometre runs.
