HEALTH & BEAUTY - HIKING

president of the American Hiking Society. Being outside amongst nature and breathing in fresh air is something that is good for us and our soul and sharing it with a friend on a hiking trip makes it even more enjoyable.

For novices it’s best to start with short local hikes, gradually working up to trails with hills and uneven terrain. If you use poles like the professionals, you dig them into the ground to propel yourself forward pushing your upper body muscles to work harder and giving you a stronger cardio workout.

If you head for the hills, even a small hill will intensify your heart rate and burn extra calories, whilst uneven terrain can work muscles whilst at the same time improve your balance and mobility.

If you pack refreshments in your back pack for sustenance, you not only keep energy levels up and yourself hydrated (essential), but if your back pack weighs around 10-15lbs you also increase the calories burned by around the same percentage!

HIKE SAFE

Whilst two’s great company and three is a welcome crowd, hiking with a buddy is also a safe option! Not only can you share the navigation, but also keep each other motivated and on the right track – follow those signs! Also, if the weather turns bad you have someone to help decide a quicker route home or the most appropriate action!

It’s also best to ‘know your route before you go’, so have a map and do some research on the area, familiarise yourself with any access issues or hard-to-navigate-trails and also take a look at the weather forecast – always be prepared. Often other hikers will document blogs about trails they have completed, have a read.

So celebrities have made it trendy, now what to wear? Here’s some hiking gear you might want to consider…
