Who and what’s going under your skin? S

o…you want to get a tattoo. Tere are many things to think of when deciding what to get. Remember, a tattoo is a permanent, life-long

commitment. (Unless you’re willing to spend big money on laser removal, or a tattoo cover-up!!) First, think about it. What is meaningful to you?

What speaks to you? What inspires you? Some peo- ple want motivational tattoos to encourage them, others want to memorialize a loved one, and oth- ers simply love the art and beauty of tattoos. You’ll want to look for an artist who can make your ideas come to life. In some cases, smaller tattoos require little to no

design time and can be done the same day. Many shops will accommodate walk-ins if they have time. Once you’ve decided on the tattoo or style, look

for an artist/shop that specializes in that style. Don’t go see an old school/traditional artist for a realistic portrait. If you’re not sure exactly what

you want, take the time to look through artists’ portfolios. You can usually find much of the artists’ work online. Visit a few different shops. A reputable shop

should smell clean, look organized, and the staff should be friendly and accommodating. If you don’t like the vibe, move on. If you’ve found an artist/shop that you like, make

an appointment for a consultation. Consultations are generally free, with no obligation to get the tat- too. Te consultation will give you a good idea of the artist’s personality and demeanor. You should feel safe and comfortable. You are, after all, paying for a service! You may decide to go for a few consulta- tions until you find the right fit. Shop around. Tis is a big decision! Now that you have decided on the shop and

artist, it’s time to bounce off ideas – the artist will begin the designing process. Be prepared to leave

Transcona teen thwarts thief of family bicycle T

he Monday morning after Mother’s Day, 19 year old Cindy (not her real name) saw a dilapidated bicycle laying on the

front lawn of her family home and was baffled. But the real story was in the backyard. During the night the shed doors were opened and someone had departed with the bike Cindy and her parents used to go to their various work shifts, which are nearby. The family had been victimized before,

“and that contributed to moving out of the west end and into Transcona about 15 years ago. We considered our house in Transcona safe. Tere’s no back lane, the backyard fence is really high so the shed isn’t in plain view, and there’s only one gate beside the house. But overnight, we got robbed.” Incensed at the prospect of replacing a $750

bike, she scoured Kijiji but saw nothing. Ten, 2 days later, Cindy got a huge lead. "Tere was a Kijiji ad selling our bike for $250, so I told my mom we should make a

police report. Tey told us not to attempt to contact the seller but that's simply not accept- able. Police don’t have time to worry about one stolen bike from Transcona and I knew they would never get around to following up.” Checking into the Kijiji account, she found

4 other ads for various things like clothing and X-Box games being sold. Te phone numbers in the ads were all different but one seemed a legit number and it matched a Facebook account. “… and there he was. With a profile picture

with his partner and their baby. I was not impressed. Te seller looks like he’s 30 but a rough 30, it geolocated around Inkster and Main. I posed as a buyer and he said to meet him outside a coffee shop near St. Annes Rd.” So, instead of having dinner, the teen and

her mom drove over and waited outside, prepared to walk away if there was a hint of a problem. When he rode up they could tell by the distinctive faded handlebars, it was their bike. He hesitated to get off but obviously a buyer needs to check the seat. Her mom looked at the frame, passed Cindy the bike,

and confronted the one man crime wave: “My mother did all the talking, I was just

the muscle,” she laughed, “and she told him, ‘that’s a nice bike you’re selling, but it’s ours!’ “He claimed he bought it from a friend and

my mom whipped out the police card with the incident number. She explained we had made a report and proceeded to inform him we were taking our bike back – unless he wanted us to call the police.” Af ter processing her declarat ion, he

changed his story and said he got it from a stranger on Main St. for $50. “I don’t think he was a fence, I personally

believe he was the prowler” Cindy said, “but there are a thousand families victimized like ours. Our neighborhoods are being scoped out by suspicious looking people. Te Facebook groups for Transcona, North Kildonan and River Heights are full of people’s complaints about stolen trailers, furniture, bikes ...” She's looking forward to voting for the first

time, in the upcoming civic election, and thinks the anger of young voters is underes- timated.

a deposit. Tis ensures that your tattoo will be de- signed, and that your artist is compensated for their time and efforts designing your piece, should you decide not to show up for the tattoo. Tis protects both the artist and the client. Te deposit should be deducted from the total cost of your tattoo (it’s a good idea to check with your artist ahead of time.) Keep in mind, prices vary by shop, so do your re- search to avoid any financial surprises! Once the design is ready, you’ll get to take a

look at it, and make any final changes, if neces- sary. You’re now ready to book your appointment. When choosing a date, it’s ideal to pick a day free of other activities. You don’t want to rush your artist because you have an important dinner date right after your tattoo! Tis is your day – make the tattoo a priority. Sean Bruce is the owner of South of Heaven Tat-

“No one we know says they want money

spent on opening Portage and Main. I’ve only seen extreme opposition to it. Te police are already $1M short - now spending money on that downtown intersection, instead of protecting residents? We want to feel safe at home, we want these prowlers stopped, caught, and punished. I’ll vote for people who want to solve crime, not spend millions to be popular or famous.” Cindy paused and concluded, “Consider-

ing Mayor Bowman raised the price of bus fare it would also be nice if the buses showed up and ran on time – especially since bikes keep getting stolen. He gets paid by the taxpayers and can afford new bikes if his kids get ripped off. Tat isn’t reality for the rest of us.” Cindy is right, that the residential crime

problem across Winnipeg runs far deeper than anyone at City Hall wants to acknowl- edge. When Mayoral candidates start knocking on doors, they better be prepared with some good answers for nervous, fed-up residents all across the city.
