Alvin is recognised for helping young readers


AMAN who has been volunteer- ing as a reading helper at aMaid- stone primary school for 10 years has been recognised for his contri- bution at the Kent Teacher of the YearAwards 2018. Alvin Shaw(64), fromMaidstone,


was namedVolunteer of theYear for the Maidstone district at the Kent Teacher of the Year Awards at the MercureGreatDanesHotel. Categories included awards for


primary, secondary, and newly- qualified teachers, non-teaching staff such as dinner ladies and care- takers, and the volunteer award. Alvin trained to become a volun-


teer with reading charity Beanstalk just over 10 years ago. Since then he has been visiting ParkWay Primary School inMaidstone twice aweek to help childrenwith their reading. Beanstalk recruits, trains andsup-


ports volunteers towork one-to-one with children agedthree to 13, tode- velop their passion for reading. Malou Bengtsson-Wheeler, area


manager for Beanstalk South East, who attended the ceremony, said:

especially those at Park Way Pri- mary. The school’s management team, staff and Beanstalk have been extremely supportive ineverything I do. “When I first volunteered10 years


ago, I could never have envisaged howitwould develop.” Beanstalk is looking for volunteers

News Health trust’s


newchairman RICHARD Field is the new chair of Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust. As


the


trust's vice chair, Mr Field has temporarily stepped into the shoes of David Grif- fiths, who retired in May. Richard has been a non-ex-


ecutive director at KCHFT for seven years. The trust hopes to appoint a


permanent replacement over the summer. Richard said:


“Having


worked closely with David, I am pleased to undertake this role until his successor can be appointed. “I will continue to help the


trust to build on the strong platform that has been cre- ated, putting patients and staff at the heart of what we do.”
