even more dramatic, dropping eight cents a kilogram from the previous period. Janzen said BC’s price dropped less than in Ontario, which saw its live price decrease three cents a kilogram. Janzen also noted that after several periods of underproduction, BC is back to producing 100% of its allocation. Although 40% of BC growers are underproducing their allocation, their shortfall is offset by growers who are overproducing. “Some growers have been producing up to 110% of their allocation with no penalty,” he pointed out. He told growers it is essential the province
produce all the chicken it has been allocated since “it affects our differential allocation.”
Farmers of Canada is developing an antimicrobial use (AMU)
strategy to “provide a sustainable means of meeting expectations while protecting animal health.” One grower said government should delay implementation of the bans until Canadian growers have access to the same tools as other countries. For example, Canada classifies Bacitracin as a Category III drug while the US considers it a Category IV drug, meaning it will not be restricted south of the border.

Dale Krahn also updated growers on the Poultry in Motion mini-barn program. Krahn said the Fraser Valley trailer visited 70 schools, including 20 on Vancouver Island, last year. Almost 23,000 students attended the presentations. “This is a fantastic program and a great way to get our message about how we grow and feed our chicken to the younger generation,” he said.
