Allingtonpatients get anewsurgery after all

PATIENTS in Allington who feared they would lose access to GP services when two surgeries announced they would shut be- fore the summer have been handed a reprieve. Maidstone-based The College

Practice, in College Road, has stepped in to take over the Alling- ton Clinic and handle those af- fected by the closures. Around 5,000 patients are on the

books of the GPs stepping aside. Dr Robert Mennie (61) blamed

the increased pressure of working “12 ormore hours per day” for his decision to retire. He wrote to his patients: “Over

the past two years, I have started to feel the pressure of working very long hours, often 12 ore hours per day.At this stage inmy career, the long hours have been simply too much forme.” West Kent CCG confirmed that

The College Practice, which also has a practice in Barming, has de- cided to intervene in the crisis.

TheCCGsaid patients registered

with the practice will be able to visit any of the three surgeries. It advised all residents living

within the Allington area who are currently registered with the Allington Park Surgery andAlling- ton Clinic will transfer to the new Allington branch of The College Practice. The transfer will be handled au-

tomatically, so there will be no need for patients to re-register. The CCGintends towrite to all affected patients. “This appears to be a very good

outcome”, says local councillor, Dan Daley, pictured left. “It is vi- tally important that the provision of GP facilitieswithinwalking dis- tance for Allington residents has been continued.” MPHelenGrant said: “I amvery

pleased to hear there is going to be a practice still operating in Alling- ton. This service is crucial for my constituents who live in the area, demonstrated by the fact that so many of them have written to me in the past fewweeks on this topic. “I amglad that theCCGwas able

to find a solution which doesn’t leave my constituents without a surgery and grateful to TheCollege Practice for agreeing to set up this branch practice.” The Allington clinic’s Dr Mayur

Vibhuti decided to also step down at the same time as DrMennie.
