Celebrate National ASC Month in August Host a facility tour and invite your state representative BY DANIELLE KASTER

While awareness of the ASC industry has grown, many lawmakers still lack a full understanding of how ASCs positively

affect America’s health care industry. Facility tours play a powerful role in educating lawmakers and influenc- ing the legislative process. During the facility visit, policymakers directly observe how their policies affect patients and ASCs. ASCA’s National ASC Month cel- ebrates the ASC industry by promot- ing awareness through open houses and facility tours with local and federal offi- cials. Each August, ASCA members across the country open their doors to the public and elected officials. Dur- ing the 2017 National ASC Week, ASC staff from more than 25 ASCs helped educate members of Congress about the safe, affordable and accessible care that ASCs provide to constituents. More than half of them went on to support ASC initiatives. “ASCA coordinated a visit and tour of our facility with Representative

Fred Upton last August,” says Shelby Weaver, RN, administrator and direc- tor of nursing at Great Lakes Surgery Center in St. Joseph, Michigan. “It was a great educational experience and opportunity to speak to our Con- gressman about some of the issues and struggles ambulatory surgery centers

face, and to have a chance to show him what excellent service we provide to our patients and community through our ASC.”
