2018 Chinatown banner design released
T
he Year of the Dog was happily welcomed at the Chinese New Year Banquet located at Kum Koon Garden, where the winning design from the 2018
Chinatown Banner Competition was officially unveiled. Te unveiling introduced the new and original design that is now displayed along many of Chinatown’s busiest streets. Te annual competition, a partnership between the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre, aims to celebrate arts, culture and the community, and mark the arrival of the Chinese New Year. Eighteen new banners have been installed in Chi-
natown, breathing new life and rejuvenating the com- munity’s interest in this unique and dynamic district of our city centre. In addition, all of the Chinatown district banners will be reprinted this year to give the area a refreshed, new look. First time banner designer and student from the Mani-
toba Institute of Trades and Technology, Laura McGinn, was awarded with a plaque and honorarium and was pleased that her banner design was selected to welcome residents and visitors to one of her favourite districts in Winnipeg.
Of the 43 entries received this year, the jury was
thrilled to select the winning Year of the Dog banner for its thoughtful design. Te banner showcases a Pe- kingese dog, an ancient breed from China favoured by the royalty of the Chinese Imperial Court. Te design is also reminiscent of Chinese Red Envelopes, traditionally given out during the Chinese New Year. Te jury felt that the banner design captured the essence of the Year of the Dog and believe that this banner will fit seamlessly into the architecture and culture of Chinatown. Te Downtown Winnipeg BIZ recognizes the impor-
tance of creating beautiful and unique spaces in our downtown that not only engage pedestrians but also artists. Te Chinatown Banner Competition provides a wonderful opportunity for local artists, namely students, to showcase their talent while at the same time enhanc- ing the streetscape and celebrating Chinatown’s rich culture. Te 2019 Year of the Pig Banner Competition is now open with January 18, 2019 as the deadline. A call for entries will be announced on the Downtown Win- nipeg BIZ Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts and available on the website at
