News Scouts learn to
copewith life THE Scouting syllabus is to include badges for copingwithmodern life. Topics such as doorstep crime,
managing money, online scams and fire safety are included in 12 new modules for Kent’s Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and Explorers. Once established, the intention is
to promote the Skills4Life scheme to Scout groups across the UK. Dean Harding, Kent commis-
sioner for the Scouts, has wel- comed the initiative, which has been devised for six to 18-year-olds byKCC’s public protection service. He said: “We are confident this in- formation will prove invaluable to the young people who study for these newbadges.”

Shirley and petMolly die the very same day
FOR more than 20 years Shirley Lowry and her beloved catMolly were devoted – and nowthey have died within two hours of each other. Former Lloyds Bank employee
Shirley (53), well known in Maid- stone area for her caring work as a local life celebrant, was diagnosed with uncurable cancers more than a year ago. She married local funeral direc-
torMichael Lawrence last spring at BoughtonMonchelsea Church and recently moved from Madginford to their Headcorn home. “Shirley always thought ofMolly
as her child and she slept on Shirley’s hospital bed at our home almost continuously,” Michael said. “Theywere so close.” Molly had become very frail and
Michael arranged for her to be taken to their vet. He received a phone call thatMolly had died. Shirley never knew. Shewas des-
perately ill and two hours later, withMichael holding her hand, she died.

Spring into Healthier Lifestyle
Shirley Lowry and her precious catMolly, right, who she was de- voted to
A packed congregation learned
the story at Shirley’s unique fu- neral in Boughton Monchelsea Church, where her wishes for a colourful and loving service were
met with all mourners attaching card butterflies to her coffin and ending with dancing to popular music. Shirley and Michael were both
active members of the Rotary Clubs ofMaidstone and theWeald respectively. But she is also remembered
fondly for her warm and happy personality, particularly in her work as an ordainedminister. Michael had planned a romantic
proposal during a Norwegian hol- iday atChristmas 2016 but it had to be cancelled after her shock diagno- sis with untreat- able cancer. Last spring, we
reported how the couple were de- termined to make the most
of
Shirley’s remaining time. She said at the time: “We are truly
blessed to have the friendship and love of so many friends, Rotarians, colleagues and our families.”
