SHIRLEY Lowry (53), waswell known in Maidstone area as a life celebrant. Shewas ordained a minister with Maidstone Independent Christian Spiritualist Church eight years ago, following 25 years with Lloyds Bank. She conducted weddings, blessings, baby namings and many local funerals. Shirley married


local funeral director Michael Lawrence at Boughton Monchelsea Church in April last


year after consultants discovered she had untreatable cancers. At that time, Michaelwas president of


the Rotary Club of theWeald and Shirley a member of the Rotary Club of Maidstone. Current president Velia LeQuelenec said: “Shewas a lovely, happy person who greeted everyonewarmly with a smile.” Shirley lived for many years in


Egremont Road, Bearsted, but recently she and Michael moved to Headcorn.


Jean Adams


JEAN Adams won many top prizes at Chelsea Flower Show and Kent County Show for the high quality pansies she and her husbandWally grew in their garden at Hazeldene, Dean Street, East Farleigh. When they retired from the business


they moved to Headcorn. Jeanwas a long-standing member of


East Farleigh Parish Council and included in her duties planting the horse trough outside the church with flowers and arranging li�er picking days. Shewas also a village allotment trustee.Her funeral is at BoughtonMonchelsea


Geoff Smith


BOXLEY Parish Council has paid tribute to local councillor Geoff Smith (84), who served from 1998 to 2016. Bob Hinder, current council chairman,


said Geoffwas “a kind, gentle and hardworking man who gave a lot of his time and energy to the various


communities he lived and served in.” Geoff’s council workwas notable for his interest in the natural environment, an interest he brought with him from New Zealand, where he had a smallholding. His work locally ensured that issues like tree planting and maintaining rights of waywere always high on the Boxley Parish Council agenda. He had taken a particular pride of local


developments of allotments and the Weavering Diamond Jubilee Orchard. Prince Edward, Duke ofWessex,was welcomed by Geoff to the opening of the orchard. He had strong connections to St William’s church inWalderslade and to All Saints in Boxley, where his funeral took place.

THE death has been reported in Stoke on Trent of Reg Sharp (91), formerly of Headcorn and Ulcombe and husband of the late Joy.


Deborah Draper


THE death has been announced at home in Folkestone of Deborah Elizabeth Draper (68), formerly of Bearsted. Deborah worked as a home carer locally

to Giles, James and Ben. Her death announcement said: “She


spent her life caring for others... Deborah was the most beautiful lady inside and out, the most amazing mum and nan.” Deborah leaves her husband, children and grandchildren.


Mildred Matete Hlabi THE death of Ziwbabwean-born nurse Mildred Matete Hlabi (43) in a car accident made local headlines. The mother of two worked at KIMS Hospital, Maidstone. Mildred, who lived in Ashford, had qualified as a midwife in Africa andwas noted as someone with a natural ability to care for others, including her blind mother in Africa. Her husband, Moses, has paid tribute to


a “very compassionate and kind lady”. Some 700 people paid tribute to Mildred –

THE death has been announced ofwell- known Leeds resident John Croucher (88). John lived in the same small co�age in


Upper Street for most of his life. He is remembered as a fine sportsman in


his youth both as a cricketer and footballer, according to David Wra�en, the Leeds & Broomfield Cricket Club groundsman. Johnwas a passionate gardener and


loved to grow his own vegetables and kept a neat plot right up until his final years. In recent times, John had suffered ill-


health although friends in the village rallied round to help him.

Martyn became a chartered surveyor and combined working in that area with long periods during which he travelled the world. He returned to studying and earned a master’s degree from the University of


Northumbria and gained another educational award – the Northern Counties Educational Prize. His father, David, said: “Martynmoved to London for the final 15 years of his life.Hewas an exceptional student and brought his intelligence to bear on hiswork.His focus was on public housing and, in particular, housing for families.His contribution to thisworkwas recognisedwith aNational RecognitionAward fromTheHousing Association in 2016.”Martyn leaves his father and mother, Valerie, his sister Helen and nieces Sophie and Holly.
