ALS UK was asked to move a crate containing a solar turbine from a packer in Irlam to Felixstowe. The dimensions provided suggested the crate was 4.7m high and could easily be delivered by road to the port. However, when the ALS team
made a site visit it found that the crate was 4.86m high, which
increased the overall transport dimensions to over 5m high. This made a road delivery in the time frame required impossible as obtaining and planning a high load road route could take weeks, if not months. Worse, the cargo was soon
due to depart on a vessel from Felixstowe in order to arrive in

Automotive and intermodal traffic (sea containers, pallets, boxes, and general loose cargo) were the strong growth areas for Antonov Airlines in 2017, says business development director, Michael Goodisman. Both sectors showed strong
growth in tonne-km terms, at 18% and 23% respectively. He adds: “A significant part of these figures can be attributed to the defence sector which remains strong overall.” Other success stories were
industry and machinery at 11%, aerospace at 14% and energy at 10%. Oil and Gas activity is still recovering at around 6%. Humanitarian flights towards the end of the year contributed a 6% increase. Goodisman adds: “We expect a similarly wide contribution from these sectors moving into 2018, but as always certain sectors could move more than
others due to changes in oil prices or defence decisions.” Antonov has completed a life extension programme
–
giving an additional 20 years - on all seven of its AN-124-100 aircraſt and its AN-225. It has also increased the payload of two of its AN-124-100s from 120 to 150 tonnes and will continue to extend this capability to its other AN-124-100s. The carrier has upgraded
flight and navigation equipment to ensure that it can fly under the stricter conditions now required by certain airports. It is also installing upgraded airborne equipment and redistributed crew members’ duties to reduce the number of
personnel
required. Maintenance improvements have meanwhile reduced downtime and, in partnership with its Ukrainian engine supplier, reduced noise and made other improvements.

solution was to move the crate on a trailer from the plant to the terminal and charter a small vessel to meet the ship later on its

voyage in Rotterdam. Despite heavy weather
delaying the arrival of the MV Bonita in Irlam until the morning of Sunday 17th December, the crate was loaded on board, enabling her to sail on the aſternoon tide the same day and arriving in Rotterdam in plenty of time to make the seagoing vessel.
