Why Malta’s

the perfect place for your family holiday

When you’re choosing a holiday for the whole family, keeping everyone happy might seem a daunting prospect; especially if you’ve got older kids. Long gone are the days of kids clubs and armbands by the hotel pool: it’s time to find a getaway which will keep teens entertained, without losing the feeling of a traditional family holiday.

WHY MALTA?

It’s no surprise that Malta’s always been a favourite for family holidays. Friendly, inclusive and safe, the island’s supportive of LGBTQ+ rights, has a fun-loving festival culture and is home to lots of rich, interesting history. This means you can roam around in complete freedom, and if you get lost, don’t worry; English is the official language so you can easily ask for directions.

Found between Sicily and the North African coast, another bonus for families is that it’s warm for most of the year. This is especially handy to know if your kids are in higher education or can be more flexible with term times: the sun will still be shining even in the Easter holidays or the autumn half-term.

ON DRY LAND

If you’re looking for some adventure while you’re away, there’s plenty of fun for the whole family to have. From rock-climbing and hiking to archery and cycling, going off the beaten track has never been easier. If your older kids are thrill-seekers, they can do everything from exploring in a Jeep safari to go-karting; if you want to, you could still relax on a sun lounger, but there’s no reason why you would with all this on offer. One of the top things that you can do in Malta is head out on a horse ride, so use this adventure to see some of Malta’s most beautiful scenery.

IN THE DEEP BLUE

If the kids are more at home in the sea than on dry land, make sure you try the water sports while you’re here. With miles of rugged coastline and turquoise waves, hotspots like the Blue Lagoon rival those in the Caribbean, without the long-haul flight, as Malta’s just three hours away. The clear waters here will give you the perfect opportunity for snorkelling and diving; the island’s the second best diving destination in the world, as voted for by Diver magazine. You can head out with one of the diving centres, and kids can get their PADI certification from just ten years old.
