LENT SMALL GROUPS

Small groups continue to meet throughout the season of Lent to discuss readings from Te Life You’ve Always Wanted: Spiritual Disciplines for Ordinary People by John Ortberg, senior pastor of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church in California. Weekly readings correspond directly with our Lent sermon series on discipleship as part of our yearlong theme, “Rooted in Christ: Growing as Disciples in Community.”

Ortberg speaks of discipleship as a path toward transformation or morphing— from the Greek word morphoo, meaning “the inward and real formation of the essential nature of a person.” Te disciple of Jesus not only seeks but wants to do what Christ would do. Te disciple—in becoming disciplined—is someone, Ortberg says, “who can do the right thing at the right time in the right way with the right spirit.”

During the five-week series, small- group participants have been discussing chapters that touch on spiritual disciplines such as celebration, slowing down, prayer, confession, guidance from the Holy Spirit, and reflection on scripture.

If you’re not participating in a small group, you’re invited to read the book and hear the word proclaimed on Sundays more deeply.

SOUPER SERVICE WEEKEND Souper Service activities over the weekend of February 2 to 4 were a huge success.

Te weekend events began on Friday, February 2, with a Soup and Chili Cook- Off from 6 to 8 p.m. During the gathering, 330 snack bags were prepared for the Warming Station.

On Saturday, February 3, FPCA members and friends gathered for nearly a dozen service activities on our campus and in the community. Tese included making and serving a meal for the homeless, painting a room or sorting donations at the Sixth Street Shelter, making soup or cards at church for our homebound members, learning to knit through the church’s knitting ministry, stuffing Easter eggs, cleaning the church property, making a form of yarn from plastic bags, and praying for all those participating in these events.

Tanks to all who were involved with leading or participating in service projects. Another churchwide Day of Serving is planned for Saturday, May 5, so mark your calendars to serve at our church and in our community.
