WATER treatment nfrom page 39 Cleaning water

Clean water is nevertheless critical to plant health in greenhouses, because it won’t add to the issues in irrigation systems. Garbage out is usually the result of garbage going in, and Zylstra said growers need to understand the source water they’re using in order to optimize its cleanliness for their operations. “We have to look at cleaning up your water source,” he says. “Sometimes that doesn’t matter because it’s municipal water and it has a low pathogen count. Sometimes it matters a lot because it’s surface water coming out of a pond or a river.”

4-H British Columbia has moved to new offices on Kalamalka Lake Road in Vernon. The big move happened in early November. 4-H BC staff, from left to right, Coby Hilgerson, Genevieve Dunbar and Belinda Field, are are looking forward to having more space and a ground level office – especially during program season! An open house is planned for the new year. 4-H BC will be closed for the holidays December 18 to January 2. GINA HAAMBUCKERS PHOTO

While most people know water as good ol’ H2O (Dihydrogen monoxide), the actual chemistry of source water is seldom simple. Seasonal variations in both water supplies and treatment methods mean even the

composition of municipal water will shift. “It’s cheap, $35, $45, and

you get a water analysis that tells you exactly what’s going on in your water,” Zylstra says. “Your plant, your facility, your profit margin depends on that water.” Growers who have holding ponds will want to make sure the ponds have effective aeration to prevent the build- up of anaerobic bacteria. By exposing bacteria to oxygen and light through regular turnover, growers can engage in an effective form of pretreatment. Oxygen stops anaerobic bacteria from increasing and carrying through into the irrigation pipes, where they can cause problems. Zylstra said a properly aerated pond has 10 to 15 turnovers a day, and up to 20 times if the water is really dirty.

A good filtration system comes next, and will reduce the cost and improve the effectiveness of sanitation treatments down the line. “Any kind of water

treatment that you look at is going to be cheaper, easier to buy, easier to operate if the water is filtered first,” Zylstra says. “Physical removal of pathogens, particulates, to the extent that it’s possible is always the cheapest option, period.”

systems, BC’s aquaculture sector has developed a 30 micron filter, but a 10 micron filter will start to remove pathogenic materials such as spores. Zylstra prefers filters that can tackle three to 10 micron particles, which eliminates the majority of contaminants prior to chemical treatments. This will also reduce the growth of biofilms in irrigation lines and prevent the root hairs of plants from becoming occluded and less able to access nutrients. Disinfection is the last and easiest stage of ensuring clean water flows to plants. “There’s a dozen ways that I can clean up my source water; it’s easy. I don’t have to accomplish anything more; I just have to kill stuff,” Zylstra says – but then cautions growers: “You have to play by the rules for any of them to work.”

When it comes to clean

water, and healthier greenhouse irrigation that can put profits into the pants of growers, Zylstra is blunt. “There are no shortcuts,” he

says. “There is no magic elixir. There is no one system, not that I sell, not that anyone sells, that’s going to solve the problem all by itself. It’s important to understand that every part of your water system is involved in water treatment.”
