the five-year-old division of the 2016 World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses in Ermelo, Te Netherlands.
Registry Benefits Since its launch, the ARS has enjoyed a warm reception from the public. Stallion owners, breeders and owners of Rhineland performance horses who have inquired about the ARS have welcomed the prospect of a new alternative among registry op- tions and expressed enthusiasm about working with the ARS under the organizational umbrella of the AHS. As a result, the fledgling registry has experienced steady growth in all areas—ap- provals of stallions and mares, registration of foals and recording of Rhinelanders for competition purposes. Te ARS, as administered by the AHS, offers significant
benefits for current Hanoverian and Rhineland breeders and owners, as well as attractive opportunities for non-Hanoverian, non-Rhineland and new breeders: Both the Rhineland studbook and the Hanoverian studbook
are managed under a single organizational umbrella, resulting in convenience and savings for breeders and owners. One annual membership in the AHS and one payment of stallion and/or mare dues provide the member with the opportunity and flex- ibility to utilize both studbooks. Additional time and money savings are realized through the combined AHS and ARS inspection tour, which permits breeders and owners to attend a single inspection site in order to have their breeding stock con- sidered for inclusion in either or both studbooks. Te Rhineland studbook offers increased options to breeders
in their choices of both stallions and mares, since the breed- ing criteria for the Rhineland Studbook is slightly different and more inclusive than that of the Hanoverian studbook. For example, the Rhineland studbook, unlike the Hanoverian stud- book, permits the approval of horses of color such as pinto and dilutes (e.g., palomino, etc.). Te ARS offers breeders and owners of Rhineland perfor-
mance horses a comprehensive awards program to reward suc- cessful competition in dressage, eventing, hunters, jumpers and sport horse breeding.
For mare owners in particular: Te ARS automatically approves all Hanoverian and non- Hanoverian mares that have been accepted into the Hanoverian main studbook. Tese mare owners may take advantage of this approval if they wish to choose a stallion that is approved for Rhineland breeding but not approved for Hanoverian breeding. To determine if the stallion you have chosen for your Hanove- rian mare is on the Rhineland-approved list, please contact the Rhineland office directly. Te resulting foals will be eligible for registration with the Rhineland studbook.
62 March/April 2018 SPECIAL HANOVERIAN SECTION
Te ARS will approve any non-Hanoverian mare without
being reinspected, as long as the mare scored greater than an overall 6 (with no subset below 5) at any previous AHS in- spection. Te ARS will approve any non-Hanoverian mare that
is registered in the main marebook of a registry specified in the “Eligible Registries” list (included below) without being reinspected, contingent upon approval of the mare’s pedigree, confirmation of recorded DNA and receipt of a copy of the official main marebook inspection scoresheet of the relevant registry. Other Warmblood mares will be considered on a case-by-
case basis. You may submit your mare or stallion for eligibility approval on-line. Visit the American Rhineland Studbook at
www.usrhineland.org, and click on “Studbook & Inspections” to obtain the on-line submission form. Te ARS would like to thank the stallion owners, breed-
ers and competition horse owners for their support of this registry. Looking forward, the ARS aims to continue to grow the registry and expand its programs. We’ve already seen a positive reaction to the expansion of the ARS’s social media presence in our ongoing efforts to promote Rhineland breed- ing and competition horses. v
