qualifying period” (September 1, 2017–April 30, 2018). Any CDI3* and above is considered a qualifying competition during this period. Following April 30, 2018, the Selectors will name the Short List of up to eight athletes. The Short List is selected based on a series of criteria—including scores/rank- ings, consistency of scores, etc. The Short List will then be required to compete in official Observation Events, which are mostly big events in Europe such as Rotterdam CDIO5*/3* and Aachen CDIO5*/4*. This allows our athletes the oppor- tunity to compete in some of the bigger arenas in the world, against top athletes from other nations, prior to coming to the World Equestrian Games. We will name the U.S. Dressage Team in August 2018. Link to official Selection Criteria and related documents:

DRIVING

Key Personnel: Chef d’Equipe, Barry Hunter (pending final approval); Team Leader, Danielle Aamodt; Selectors are Marc Johnson, Elizabeth Keathley, Jennifer Matheson, Josh Rector, Katie Whaley, Amy Cross (alternate); Team Veterinarian, TBA. Selection Synopsis: (From Danielle Aamodt) Eight quali-

fied drivers have applied to represent the U.S. The qualifying period began September 15, 2017. Athlete/horse combina- tions will be required to complete at least three of the listed selection trials, with at least two of those being within the same calendar year of the WEG. Selectors will publish prelimi- nary athlete/horse combination ranking lists every other month beginning in January 2018, although the ranking does not guarantee selection but is an indicator to the drivers where they stand at a point in time. The final U.S. selection trial is in April, then May through July the drivers are likely to be going to Europe to continue competing and preparing for WEG. Before the FEI definite entry date (September 10) the Selectors will recommend rankings to the USEF Driving Sport Committee and the USEF BOD or an ad hoc committee. The Selectors will recommend three athletes to the U.S. Driving Team and a minimum of one reserve, which in turn must be recommended by the IDC, and approved by the BOD or ad hoc committee. U.S. Dressage Technical Advisor and Chef d’Equipe for the U.S. Dressage Team at the Rio Olympics Robert Dover. He will also serve as Chef d’Equipe at the 2018 WEG. Dover accepted his posi- tion with the team in 2013. That summer he presented his “Roadmap to the Podi- ums” plan at the FEI Adequan North “We have to

create a world-class ‘machine.’ We have to use a bottom-to-top pipeline as in a pyramid. In order to do this it is paramount that we have not only adequate funding, but incredible funding,” he said during that presentation. During his tenure the U.S. Dres- sage Team returned to the medal podium at the Rio Olympics last fall and the focus on developing young riders and horses has intensified. Dover will step down as Team Advisor and Chef after the 2018 WEG, but plans to continue to give back to the sport in other roles.
