Participate in National Advocacy Day Meet your members of Congress and advocate for your ASC in Washington, DC BY DANIELLE KASTER

More than 5,600 Medi- care-certified ASCs pro- vide

care to patients

across the US. Despite the expanded access to top-

quality care that ASCs offer and the billions of dollars ASCs save patients, Medicare and private insurers each year, many elected officials do not fully understand the role ASCs play in health care. ASCA members are key to helping policymakers understand the many benefits that ASCs provide to their communities and the health care system. To help with that process, ASCA

provides several opportunities to its members to educate local and federal officials. One of the most effective is the association’s National Advocacy Day program. Participants in National Advocacy Day come to Washington, DC, to speak with their members of Congress and their staff face-to-face. In 2017, more than 300 ASCA mem- bers from across the country met with their representatives on Capitol Hill. “[National] Advocacy Day was

very productive [and] informa- tive,” says Randall Robbins, MD, of Surgery Center of Oak Ridge dba Advanced Family Surgery Center in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. “It opened my eyes to the importance of the advo- cacy process and the importance of the involvement of all outpatient sur- gery centers, and their administrators and physician owners.” ASCA will host two National

Advocacy Days in 2018: Tuesday, June 5, and Wednesday, September 5. On those days, participants will attend three to five meetings with their rep- resentatives on Capitol Hill speaking with federal policymakers and health care staff about the role ASCs play in
