Got Data... Now What?

“The biggest hurdle in a data management system is what items to measure. This is like selecting a meal from the buffet, different companies, managers, supervisors and operators are all going to choose the items that most meet their needs.” Keith Ware, Lavatec

The modern plant is full of equipment trying to tell its operators how it is performing. What used to take painstaking record keeping and troubleshooting to determine that is now spelled out instantly on screens and in spreadsheets. That’s part of the problem; many operators are over- whelmed by so much data they don’t know what to adjust first.

We talked with manufacturers and distributors about the data stream, and how owners and operators can maximize it for their benefit. They also gave us examples of some of the kinds of data generated by specific machines and systems, so you know what’s out there when you are making your next upgrade purchases.

MOVING FORWARD

“People should be considering technology feature add-ons when they are purchasing equipment,” said D’Arcy McConvey of Dalex. “It is where Research and Development is focused these days. Technology, when properly used, simplifies the cleaning process and does the work for you.” Having data is not enough, however. “The data being captured needs to align with the operating expenses in a business,” said Mike Pilolli from Coin- amatic. “When we use the data in this manner, it helps control behaviours that drive processes. There should be a continual focus on reducing expenses and optimizing people, while maintaining equal or better results. All manu- facturers provide data in one way or another. The key is to determine what problem the business is trying to solve.”
