TRAVEL guide Cape Town & The Winelands


Having just returned from Cape Town, I thought my arcle this month ought to share my wonderful experiences. Chrisna Pegler


I spent 5 nights in Cape Town at various different hotels, ranging from a former prison to the Table Bay hotel on the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, a buzzing area of the city, full of restaurants, shops, cafés and entertainment.


we missed the last ones by a couple of weeks). A lovely lile town, well worth a visit and usually where people would start their trip down the Garden Route. The drive from Cape Town to Hermanus is truly stunning, but more beauty was saved for our drive from Hermanus up to the Winelands.


We did a Peninsular tour down to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point via Boulders Beach and a visit to penguins, not to be missed! The drive via Chapmans Peak is stunning, with many worthwhile photo stops. We passed many beauful beaches en route, including Camps Bay and stopped for lunch at the incredible Twelve Apostles Hotel (worth a visit if not a stay!).


Aer our stay in Cape Town, we drove down to Hermanus, famous for the whales, which inhabit its waters from late May unl late October (sadly


The Winelands encompass a large area, but its best known towns are Stellenbosch and Franschhoek; both lovely towns, although very different. There are some stunning farms in the area on which you can stay, wine taste or have lunch. The wine in the area is second to none, with prices to match; currently the Rand is very favourable to UK visitors.


We visited many beauful properes in the Wineland area and enjoyed the Franschhoek Wine Tram (which transports you between vineyards through the breath‐taking scenery) for a day of wine tasng. In Stellenbosch we enjoyed a ‘Foodies on Foot’ tour, which involved us trying lots of local foods and wine and chocolate pairing (what’s not to like?!).


On our return to Cape Town, we took the cable car up Table Mountain to see the beauful city and surrounding area from up high, a truly breath‐taking sight. We also visited Seal Island out of Hout Bay, which was a lovely (if a lile smelly) excursion.


Cape Town is a beauful city with incredible food and wine, spectacular scenery and friendly people, which I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.


Geng there is easy; there are direct flights from London Heathrow daily, which take around 12 hours. The me change is negligible: two hours in the winter and one in the summer and the South African Rand rate makes it incredibly affordable when you are there.
