OUr Christmas collection in Debenham, Stradbroke, eye and Framlingham raised a fantastic £2,296! Lots of children (and adults) were delighted to see Santa, and rotarians and Friends. The money will go to two local children’s charities: Suffolk Family Carers (Young carers based in Claydon, who offer information, support and advocacy to people who provide help and support to a partner, child, relative, friend or neigh- bour) and Mid-Suffolk holiday Opportunity Play Scheme (based in Thorndon, an activi- ties-based play scheme provid- ing a wide range of specialist staffing, play equipment, activi- ties and facilities, to enable chil- dren and young people with dis- abilities and additional needs access quality activities tailored to meet their need). In other news… Our annual
New Year Walk was very suc- cessful, with 35 members and friends enjoying a three-mile walk taking in aroman road and Framlingham manor, followed by lunch at the Dennington Queen. A great start to the year. Lend With Care - we continue
to support this successful help- others-to-help-themselves ini-
tiative. Most recently we have helped with loans to a Farmer in rwanda, a butcher in the Philip- pines, and a clothing and shoe retailer in Zambia. In east Anglia, rotary has loaned over £182,000 to small businesses across the world. Our ‘meeting’ on January 17th
was our annual trip to see the eastern Angles Christmas/New Year production at Woodbridge Seckford Theatre – this year, “The Ladykillers of humber Doucy Lane.” Coming up - A “Bangers and
Mash” evening, another Whisk(e)y Tasting event, and a Camelracing event at Occold to support Occold School. Prepa- rations also for our international “partnering” event in May, when we’ll be hosting clubs from four other european countries. Covering Debenham, eye,
Stradbroke, Occold, Laxfield … and every other village in between. See Facebook for pic- tures and more! Don’t just sit there…You could be part of this, as a Member, Associate or Friend! Please get in touch:

Can my children dispute my Will? The latest .....
IT’’S legal ping pong. Ideally a man would like to be sure that his wishes on death will be hon- oured. But equally ideally his closest relatives ought to be pro- tected and not left high and dry. This insoluble enigma is always coming before the courts, but each case has its own unique facts making it impossible to rely on them as firm precedents. Another case in this long line
has added a new dimension. In Nahajec v Fowle (2017) a father was estranged from his three daughters, so he left his entire estate to a friend who was in financial difficulties. he left a letter with his Will explaining his reasons. But one of the daughters also

had financial difficulties and so brought a claim against the estate. She said she needed £59K to fund a planned veteri- nary nurse training course including her related living and travelling expenses and the dis- charge of some debts. The court allowed her claim in

limited it to £30K. There had apparently been no evidence that she had planned the veterinary course while father was alive, indeed if father had intended to include her in his will it would have been for totally different reasons. Anyway, the court recognised that the daughter might never actually take up the proposed idea of a veterinary nursing qualification. The case followed the head-
line case Ilott v The Blue Cross and Ors (2017). A solicitor in the Nahajec case
commented: ‘The award was 11.3% of the estate which is very similar to that in the Ilott case (within 1%). There was specific mention of her wanting to do a veterinary course so this is an example of something that falls under the definition of “mainte- nance” post Ilott. This means that estranged child claims are not dead in the water but sug- gests that any claimants will need to show a track record of reconciliation attempts in order for the Judges to consider their views.’ For further advice about

News from Framlingham and Saxmundham Cats Protection The branch started plan- ning for the year ahead whilst mourning the loss of our dear friend and devoted volunteer Carol Sheward, who sadly died after a short illness at the end of November 2017. Carol had been with the branch for over 15 years and she was truly dedi- cated to the welfare of cats. She was an expert at trapping feral felines and had been a fosterer. In recent years Carol was our Neutering and ID officer. As a pivotal member of the fundrais- ing team she helped raise many thousands of pounds, not least with the soft toy donations she collected for her ‘every-one- a-winner tombola’. Carol was loved for her wit, wisdom and enormous compassion and will be greatly missed. Feline care: Fat Cats. You may

AFTer the January Taxreturns have been filed and taxes paid, the lull between now and the end of the tax year is a good time to undertake some basic work on your affairs to ensure that every- thing is up to date. So this month, a few things to consider on your personal affairs before April 5th arrives: Annual Dividend Allowance
(1) – If you have the ability to adjust your dividend income – possibly by transferring stocks and shares to your spouse – con- sider that the annual dividend allowance amounts to £5,000 per person for 2017/18, regard- less of the level of your other income. Transfers between mar- ried spouses or civil partners are free of tax, but you need to be careful of the settlement legisla- tion and possibly take advice in your particular circumstances. Annual Dividend Allowance
(2) – The annual dividend allow- ance will drop from £5,000 per person to only £2,000 per person from April 5th 2018. As divi- dends are now paid gross, with- out deduction of income tax, could this reduction now cause you to have a tax liability on any dividends you receive above the annual limit of £2,000? If so, will you need to register and file a Self-Assessment Tax return from April 2018 onwards? Annual Giftexemption – Any
person may gift assets free of Inheritance Tax (IhT) of up to £3,000 in 2017/18 (£6,000 if the 2016/17 allowance was not used). For a married couple gift- ing before and after the end of the tax year, if your circumstanc- es permit, you could potentially

on the pack for the daily sug- gested amount for the cat’s size, age and level of activity. Neu- tered cats typically have a decreased metabolic rate and reduced energy need, so adjust accordingly. Try splitting the daily allowance into two or three small meals, which mimics nat- ural feeding habits. Avoid leav- ing food down all day. If treats are offered, remember to take these into account when calcu- lating a daily allowance, and do not feed additional scraps. encourage plenty of play, and make your cat work for its food by putting dried biscuits or treats (taken from the daily allowance) inside puzzle balls. Sometimes just stroking your cat when they seem to be pestering for food can often placate them! Overeating can be due to stress caused by a
gift away £18,000 in two tranch- es in April and immediately save IhT of (£18,000 x 40%) £7,200 for your beneficiaries. This works if you (are able to) gift £6,000 each on April 5th (mak- ing use of the unused allowances from 2016/17 and 2017/18) fol- lowed by another £3,000 each on April 6th to utilize the 2018/19 allowance. The gifts need not be in cash as the IhT is concerned with the value of the asset being gifted. however, you should bear in mind any Capital Gains Tax (CGT) impli- cations that may be involved for non-cash assets. More Gifts - The annual Gift
Allowance is an allowance, not a limit. Most gifts greater than the available allowance become “Potentially exempt Transfers” (PeTs) which will take seven years to completely leave your estate for IhT purposes. how- ever, if the assets are surplus to requirements, consider making a gift sooner rather than later in order to start the seven-year clock running. Again, remember that there may be CGT implica- tions as well as IhT ones but for IhT purposes, you are no worse off by making a PeT gift now and if you survive the seven years, your beneficiaries will be 40% better off. And More Gifts – more com-
plicated planning arrangements can involve Trusts. Transfers into these are not PeTs but make use of your estate exemption of £325,000 which then takes seven years to recover. Trusts are more complex but often have the tax advantage of deferring any CGT on the gift and also enable the assets to be protected and controlled after your death rather than being immediately under the control of the benefi- ciary. Detailed professional tax and legal advice is required but the potential savings for your future beneficiaries can be large ISAs – nowadays a lot more
options are available including the (basic) ISA, Lifetime ISA, help-to-Buy ISA, and the Junior ISA - all of which have different allowances and benefits. The basic ISA’s limit is now £20,000 per person and still enables Income and Capital Gains Tax free investments (over and above the interest and dividend

allowances). Capital Gains Tax Allowance
– amounts to £11,300 for the current tax year. If you have not already used this allowance, you may like to consider bringing forward some sales to use this exemption where possible. If good use of the CGT allowance is not possible, consider whether it is possible to crystalise any losses before April 5th, possibly using “Bed and Spouse” if you wish to retain the investments. Any CGT losses will be avail- able to be carried forward against future gains (though some restrictions can apply for transactions with family mem- bers or other “connected per- sons”). Transfers of assets between spouses is still CGT and IhT free but hMrC are known to look closely at assets that are transferred intra-family just prior to a disposal to deter- mine whether the transfer hap- pened purely for tax reasons. Specialist advice should be sought if unsure. So whilst most may try to
