There are new faces at the Parrot & Punchbowl, Aldring- ham, but they are not unfamil- iar faces. having taken over in June 2017 the Parrott & Punch- bowl is now under the owner- ship of David James and Chris Theobald. David has been at the Dolphin


Inn, Thorpeness for the last ten years and has known Chris for just as long, as Chris has been his chef at the Dolphin for pretty much that whole time. Now, the pair are working in partnership at their new venture just a cou- ple of miles inland. David and Chris have a clear


idea of what the Parrot & Punchbowl is. This is a tradi- tional rural Suffolk pub. David


explains, there is no secret to running a good pub, offer good food and drink and a warm wel- come and you’re on the right tracks. It goes without saying that in


a freehold such as this you will get a great selection from behind the bar. The team have worked hard to update what was on offer, you will find a selection of famous local ales along with a great new wine offering as well as a growing number of craft ales and single malt whiskies. Naturally there are also plenty of soft drinks and fresh tea and coffee from which to choose too. This is very much a country pub and so from the kitchen


Chris has designed a menu that reflects the superb produce that our region has to offer. There are plenty of meat and game dishes as well as traditional hearty classics. The menu will change seasonally to reflect the chang- ing produce to ensure the team are only offering you the best and freshest home-cooked food. Currently the team offer a win- ter warmer sausage deal. Alde- burgh sausages, mash, winter vegetables, red wine and onion gravy plus a glass of wine for just £12.50. And, of course, with Valentine’s Day just around the corner be sure to book early and enjoy a romantic meal for two here at the Parrot & Punchbowl on Wednesday 14th February with three courses and a glass of prosecco for £26.50 per person. But there is more to a great


pub than just food and drink. Yes, that is important, you don’t go back to a pub if you didn’t enjoy these. however, rural gems such as the Parrot & Punchbowl have character and soul and a history that you sim- ply can’t recreate or buy. There is a rich past at this pub. enter the building and the wonky walls, higgledy-piggledy rooms leave you in no doubt that this is an historic building. The pub dates from around 1600 and,


amazingly, was in the same family – the Kemps – for 230 years from 1604 to 1834. It is during this period that the


pub’s reputation as a smugglers inn was born. There are many stories associated and tied to the Parrot & Punchbowl and it has featured in local books and pub- lications thanks to its chequered past and links with the smug- glers of yesteryear. Of course, these days those are just tales from a long time ago. The Parrot & Punchbowl is most certainly now a family friendly venue. In fact, there is even a ‘Smugglers Walk’ which starts at the Dol- phin Inn and follows a leisurely route to the Parrot before head-


ing back to the Dolphin follow- ing lunch. This charity event took place for the first-time last year and was such a success it will become an annual event. David and Chris have reno-


vated the kitchen and cellar and painted the exterior of the pub. A programme of refurbishment is on-going to ensure they con- tinue to offer both residents and visitors to the area the best pos- sible experience. It is great to see this popular
