Welcome to ROJ F
irstly, Happy New Year and may 2018 be productive and more importantly
healthy for you all. As the wheels of the waste and resources industry roll into 2018, this edition of ROJ takes a look at where we are heading in the year ahead!
National Sword kicked in during December 2017 and we are leſt to consider where will our recyclates go now that China does not want them. T ere is an easy answer to this, our industry is willing to build facilities to treat our waste more eff ectively, if only we can get government to give a helping hand in supporting the development of infrastructure with a planning framework that encourages such development and fi nance initiatives that facilitate investor confi dence, we could be very much self- suffi cient, treating our wastes within the UK boarder, which would create jobs and boost our economy. If we stopped sending RDF to Europe’s waste to energy plants - so that Europe can then sell the energy back to us, we would be a step further towards energy security.
Waste crime is high on the governments agenda with Defra and regulators willing to work with us to stamp out illegal sites and activities that undercut legitimate operators. It is therefore important that any intelligence is shared with the environmental regulators and the pressure is applied for follow up legal action to be taken against those that fl out the law.
I must say that government seems to have woken up and is at last starting to realise the sheer importance of our sector in its contribution to supporting the backbone of all other industries – as everyone and every business produces waste that requires appropriate management. UROC is on the map, with government listening to our sectors voice, we will continue to work closely with all industry bodies and government departments - as always we need your views and ideas to take to the table – so we can help in creating a profi table and sustainable industry.

Lastly, you may well be aware of the changes surrounding the RWM event held at the NEC each year, with the show now taken over by PRYSM Group – who will amalgamate its own environmental portfolio under the RWM roof, with the event to take place over two days on 12th & 13th September 2018. Rest assured UROC will do all it can to make sure we have an event that supports and show cases our world class industry!
