Forwarding’s finest
Thursday 18 January saw the highly anticipated gathering of finalists in the nine categories of the BIFA Freight Service Awards 2017 at The Brewery in Central London. A simplification of the entry process prompted
a surge in entries to all categories and BIFA was pleased to note that many members have entered the awards for the very first time. The range of finalists and winners dispels once and for all the myth that “the awards are just for the big companies”, with seven of the nine category winners being BIFA Members with a staff count of fewer than 100. Levi Roots took to the stage strumming his
guitar and singing the “Reggae Reggae Sauce” song that famously caught the attention of two ‘Dragons’ on the BBC Dragons’ Den series back in 2007. He then entertained the 450 guests in his own
inimitable style with tales of his upbringing in rural Jamaica, his time in the kitchen with his grandmother as his older siblings, one-by-one, departed for new lives in the UK, and his own journey promoting his home-cooked Reggae Reggae sauce at food fairs up and down the

country and the Notting Hill Carnival until his discovery by a BBC producer and eventual appearance on Dragons’ Den. His story is one of persistence and unwavering belief in a product combined with a flair for self-promotion and entrepreneurial spirit. Inviting the sponsor representative to join him
on stage, Levi then proceeded to introduce each category, followed by the announcement of the winner by the sponsor. As each winner made their way to collect the engraved glass trophy the “voice of god”, Roger Tilling (of University Challenge fame), read the judge’s comments (reproduced below) on the winning submission.
