News Conkie guilty


A 54-YEAR-OLD man from Maid- stone has been ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work after being found guilty of assaulting two people. Graham Conkie denied two


counts of assualt butwas convicted by Maidstone magistrates last month. On June 8, 2017,Conkie, ofMaid-


stone, assaulted two people in the county town. Magistrates also or- dered Conkie to pay £50 in com- pensation.


Flood closure


SAINSBURY’S in the centre of Maidstone was shut for a short time after heavy rain caused flood- ing in store. Water started coming through


the ceiling, causing large wet patches over the Romney Place store’s shop floor after the down- pours on January 5.


Death at flats


A MAN died at a block of flats in Maidstone just before Christmas. Emergency service crews were


called to Miller Heights just after 5pmon December 19. The deathwas not suspicious.

Cinderella’s success is boost for local theatre


ANOTHER successful pantomine run at the Hazlitt Theatre has ce- mented the county town’s desire for an “intimate, traditional” show, says its boss. MartinCleverley admits the ticket


sales were down slightly on last year but plans are already under- way to stageAladdin later this year. It is thought that a rival panto on


inMaidstonemay have contributed to a dip in audience figures. MrCleverley, generalmanager of


the theatre, said: “This year,wewel- comed 18,231 audiencemembers to see and enjoy Cinderella. “This equates to a 77% capacity


for our pantomime run throughout December, which meant a dip on previous years’ figures. However, we are proud to have received su- perb feedback and encouraged by local audiences who still want to enjoy an intimate, traditional panto in their local theatre at Christmas. “We are looking forward to de-


lighting audiences with Aladdin this year.”

national treasure Rustie Lee and former Eastender Stefan Booth. The castwere joined backstage by a host of glittering stars during itsmonth- long run. Aspokesman for the theatre said: “Itwould be a lie to say that having
