On the fast track in the south
With housing being a hot political topic at present, two development companies have proved themselves the best in the Solent region when it comes to sales figures.
Bargate Homes, based at Fair Oak near Eastleigh, was 25th in the national table. The company was founded in 2006 by former Linden Homes regional chairman Gerard Price and constructs homes around the south coast of England.
Serviced Apartments & Studio
for short or long term let in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire
If you, your business colleagues, family or friends are looking for somewhere to stay in Buckinghamshire, then have you thought about staying in The Courthouse Apartments?
In 2014, private equity firm Prowting Family Investments acquired a 30% stake in the business in a £25 million deal, allowing the firm to increase investment in new housing sites.
With a small staff approaching 40, the company grew sales to £36.4m in 2016 (average growth 85% over the past three years). Bargate has completed 55 developments to date, and plans to start another seven next year.
Another Solent company made the Fast Track table, the Hampshire-based Home Grown Hotels group making 68th place – up from 76 the previous year.
Hotel du Vin founder Robin Hutson launched this business in 2011 when he opened The Pig, a chic country-house hotel at Brockenhurst in the New Forest. The business is backed by Jim Ratcliffe, the billionaire founder and owner of chemicals giant Ineos, who owns a 50% stake.
There are now five Pig properties in southern England – including sites at Southampton and Studland, Dorset – which are known for their informal luxury and home-grown seasonal food. High average occupancy rates of above 90% at all locations helped sales hit £17.1m last year (annual average growth 55%), and with staff numbers now approaching 400 the group plans to open two additional sites in Sussex and Kent in 2018.
