boat most people can fi nd something they like. Builders and repairers are frustrated with the quality of works saying they have to hire 10 to 15 to get one or two good ones. You need to show up fi ve days a week and have a good work ethic. You do not need to know everything if you do not have experi- ence, but are willing to learn most yards will train you.

the boatbuilders and repairers of the State of Maine. On 7 December they held their annual conference and meeting at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. The conference was well attended as attendees heard about Bath Iron Works and how they put the de- stroyers together. This was followed by a discussion on outfi tting a boat for long dis- tance cruising or racing; the new advances in 3D printing by the University of Maine and last but not least, a discussion on the Volvo line of engines. Right in the middle of the last lecture of the day the Zumwalt class destroyer came up the Kennebec River and right in front of the Museum’s lecture hall she was turned around and slipped into her berth at BIW. At the annual meeting three new board members (Lyndsy Clough, John Williams Boat Co.; Bruce MacNeil, boater; and George Menezes, Southport Boats)

were added to the board that now consist of: Phil Bennett, Hinckley Co.; Bentley Col- lins, Sabre Yachts; Tim Greer, Navtronics; Audrey Hodgdon, Hodgdon Yachts; Jamie Houtz, The Landing School; Jon Johan- sen, Maine Coastal News; Mark Mitchell, Com-mar; Neal Prescott, Novabraid; Elaine Scott, Skyeboat Marketing; J. B. Turner, Front Street Shipyard; and Alice Workman, S. W. Boatworks. The other aspect of the meeting covered the newsletters, Facebook page, boat shows attended and results, and the money spent to increase traffi c to the website. The main aspect for marketing is the website, and by purchasing advertise- ments on Facebook and other social media sites this has increased the website traffi c by more than 25 percent. With this increase more funds will be used to purchase more advertising.

ing on the custom 46 footer they are com- pleting as a lobster boat for a fi sherman from North Haven. They were held up waiting for the exhaust system which had to be custom designed and now that it is here they can fi nish putting down the platform. They have also fi tted her with Humphrey trim tabs; a transducer, which they located about 10 feet from the stem and faired into the keel; and a bow thruster. Another interesting aspect of this boat was the custom rudder they made for her. Nautilus Marine in Trenton built the inner structure and they have created a foil shape to make it more hydrodynamic going through the water. This summer, they laid up a Lowell 38

At Hodgdon Yacht Service on South-

port Island are nearing the end of their hauling season with just a few left to go before Thanksgiving. They have numerous repowers, mostly outboards; nine boats are scheduled to be painted this winter and spring; and with their 250 storage customers all need varying degrees of work done before they are relaunched next spring and summer. One big project this winter is on a Deerfoot 62, which is in for a bow thruster, windlass and deck paint. This will complete a four-year restoration as her owner will be taking her around the world starting next summer.

Another project is on a Duff y 35, which

needs her head rebuilt which will include plumbing. She also needs a new electrical
