Situated on the ‘back roads’ between the City of Durham and Bishop Auckland, Brancepeth Castle Golf Club occupies an undulating and picturesque setting in the grounds of the imposing building that dates, in part, back to Norman times. Ryan Donnellan is the young Head Greenkeeper tasked with turning a few dozen acres of grassland into a phoenix reborn from the ashes of once‐ successful Charnock Richard Golf Club. Jake Barrow reports on progress thus far and discovers a man happy with his lot, but up against a tight deadline.

Downland hideaway 26

Woodlands Manor, a delightful course in the heart of the North Downs, is set for a fresh beginning. Neville Johnson went there to talk to its new Head Greenkeeper, Luke Jenkins, who is charged with the job of making it even better.

Winter Sports Banking on success...

32

It’s quite unique these days for two opposing rugby clubs to share the same playing fields, but that’s exactly what is happening at the Shaw’s Bridge Sports Complex in south Belfast. Chris McCullough headed to the Cooke and Instonians clubs to find out how this joint arrangement suits both set‐ups.

It takes two to tango... 40

Dual‐use, council‐run stadium ‘The Shay’ sits in the famous Calderdale Valley, and the quirks of its turfcare requirements derive from an oddly varied history. The ground upon which it lies has, at times, been a speedway track, a landfill site, a man‐made hill to support a road, and the starting point of an unfinished First World War railway tunnel.

Out of the darkness... 48

David Anderson joined Barnsley Football Club’s groundstaff because he was ‘handy with spanners’. He has now risen to the role of Head Groundsman and a new lighting rig is proving to be a worthwhile investment for one of the darkest pitches in the EFL.
