NewM20 junction ‘to boost local economy’
AMAJOR £104m project to create a new motorway junction on the M20 designed to boost economic growth has been granted develop- ment consent by transport secre- tary ChrisGrayling. Junction 10a at Ashford aims to
improve journeys “by relieving pressure on the existing Junction 10 and helping boost growth and jobs in the area”, according toHighways England. Mr Grayling announced the deci-
sion in a letter to the Planning In- spectorate, who reviewed the plans lastwinter andwork is scheduled to begin early next year. ChrisWelby-Everard, regionalde-
livery director for Highways Eng- land in the South East said: “This major newmotorway junction is the
biggest boost for Ashford since the arrival of international rail services nearly 20 years ago. “Junction 10awill unlock job-cre-
ating developments in the local area and will take pressure off the exist- ing J10. It will bring jobs, better in- frastructure for local services and help maintain the quality of life in and aroundAshford. “Without J10a in place, future
economic growth would have been constrained. (The) news will bring real confidence thatwewill have the road capacity needed to enable a major programme of economic and commercialdevelopment andhouse building. “I amgrateful to all the local au-
thorities and stakeholders in the area who have worked with us to
gain this planning consent, includ- ing the 900 local people who took part in our consultation last year. “Wewill continue towork closely
with our partners going forward, es- pecially people with homes and businesses nearest to the proposed newjunction.” The new junction is part of the
Government’s record £15bn invest- ment inmajor roads. J10awill be constructed about half
a mile south of the existing J10. It will use two bridges and connect to the existingA20 and a newdual car- riageway link road built to the A2070 near Sevington. Work on the improvements will
begin early next year and the new junction is expected to open to traf- fic in 2019.
