AMETEK Land to present at In-Line Measurement and Control for Metals Processing Conference

specialists, announces that its Technical Director, Dr. Peter Drögmöller, will speak at the In-Line Measurement and Control for Metal Processing Conference, December 6-7, 2017 in Warwick, UK. Dr. Drögmöller will present “Infrared Process Imaging Systems for Continuous Annealing Lines” during the Process and Other Applications session. His presentation looks at the advantages of using process thermal imaging systems, particularly thermal line scanners, and how thermal imaging systems are fast becoming the proven method of complete temperature measurement. “We are pleased to be part of the In-Line Measurement and Control for Metal Processing Conference

organised by the Bulk Metal Forming Committee of The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and to share our experience with the latest thermal process imaging technologies and their successful application within metal processing industries,” explains Dr. Drögmöller.

“As product tolerances continue to tighten and as more advanced steels emerge, simply measuring the centreline temperature along the process leaves too many unknowns about the overall edge- to-edge temperature distribution of the steel strip,” continues Dr. Drögmöller. “More companies are switching now to process thermal imaging systems, as they provide a high-definition thermal image that enables highly accurate, continuous temperature measurements to be taken. Thermal imaging provides a much more accurate picture of temperature measurement than

enabling it to identify even the smallest temperature differences. It has been designed to provide simple plug-and-play installation, with a single cable connection to reduce complexity and cost, and it is compatible with standard network infrastructure, which removes the requirement for specialist cabling and hardware. traditional single point infrared thermometers.”

In many cases the furnaces have multiple heaters across the strip width that allow the temperature profile of the strip to be optimized. Thermal line scanners provide the ability to associate lanes of temperature values along the strip. Each measurement lane provides an output that is then fed to the furnace control system. Line scanners are used at several locations along the process. Thermal line scanners can ensure the cross-profile temperature of the metal strip is flat as it exits the furnace and enters the zinc pot. This is essential as the uniform temperature profile results in the molten zinc coating the strip at the same thickness from edge to edge. AMETEK Land plans to exhibit its LSP-HD infrared linescanner for thermal process imaging at the In-line Measurement and Control for Metals Processing conference. The LSP-HD line scanner is designed to operate in harsh operating environments and is capable of scanning 1000 data points at up to 150Hz.
