Gentleman Geoff – parish stalwart dies

One hundred

years’ service IN recognition of their service three parish councillors –Vic Davies, TonyHarwood and MaureenWaller (pictured) – and clerk Pauline Bowdery were presentedwithminiature cups atNovember’smeeting. Chairman Bob Hinder said:

“I didn’twant to let it pass unnoticed that these four peo- ple have a combined service to the community of over 100 years. “Whilst the cups are plastic

– not silver or gold – the senti- ment behind the presentation is genuine.Without quality councillors and staff willing to work hard communities will be a poorer place to live.”

IT was with much sadness that Boxley Parish Council learnt of the death ofGeoff Smith, a parish councillor from1998 to 2016. BobHinder, chairman, said: “We

all knewGeoff as a kind, gentle and hard working man who gave a lot of his time and energy to the vari- ous communities he lived and served in. “We also knew that he had very

strong opinions – and a lovely sense of humour, too. His contri- butions to the parish councilmeet- ings were always welcome and he was prepared to passionately argue his point but supported the rights of others to have different views.” Geoff was always interested in

the local environment and nature andwas a talentedmusician, chess player and amateur philosopher. Having lived in New Zealand,

where he ran a smallholding, he quickly recognised the benefit of and access to open spaces and was an avid supporter of tree planting, preservation of public rights ofway and public open space/countryside improvements and he bought all these issues to the parish council’s attention. Hewas particularly proud of the parish council’s development of al-

Autumn tidy

VOLUNTEERS of the WaldersladeWoodlands Group and Boxley Parish Council chairman Bob Hin- der, joinedMaidstone Coun- cil staff in anAutumn Clean Up between Badger Road and Conifer Drive. Huge amounts of rubbish

were collected and the parish council will arrange commu- nity workers to visit to try to keep the area clean. Unfortu- nately, most of the rubbish was domestic waste, probably froma few inconsiderate local residents.

to St Williams Church in Walder- slade hewas, not just because of his impeccable dress sense, a familiar figure in the church cafe and around the village. Despite his time inNewZealand

Flytipping curse

AN INCREASE in flytipping, espe- cially around Lordswood andWalder- slade, has been noted and residents are asked to report incidents to Maidstone Borough Council. In the past, the council has been

good at removing the rubbish as it has been proven that one lot of un- cleared rubbish encouragesmore. Cllr Wendy Hinder, chairman of

the parish council’s environment committee said: “We try to keep an eye on areas that seemto attract re- peated flytipping but we need resi- dent’s help to report any they see”.
