Jewels’GORGEOUS GEMS Now that the spooks and ghouls have calmed

down to a somewhat normal level, can we please have some fall weather up in here? I’ve been sweating so much that I’m wasting away to an extra-large! Though Halloween just concluded, it seems Christmas had already begun in late July, according to many of our large retailers. I mean really, has everyone collectively decided to ignore Thanksgiv- ing? Well, if you’re one of the many folks who wish to shrug off the commercialization of the holidays, check out some of the great events and fabulous causes that are “making a difference” around SoCal this month! The Paradise Restaurant and Bar in Long

Beach has been giving back and raising funds for many local charities and in November they have a jam-packed lineup ready for you to enjoy. Every Sunday afternoon catchDrag Queen Bingo, with fabulous prizes and tons of fun. Each organization receives 100 percent of the monies raised from Sunday Bingo events at Paradise and for November, we will be raising funds for the HUB City Autism Network, The Boys & Girls Club, The Alamitos Beach Neighborhood Association and AIDS Lifecycle. There is no cost to join, and the games are purely done with donations. Do you have a cause that’s near and dear to your heart? As the unending, tragic losses of transgender

lives continues worldwide, to honor those lost in acts of anti-transgender violence, this year’s Transgender Day of Remembrance takes place Monday, November 20. TDoR was created to memorialize those who are killed due to anti- transgender hatred or prejudice. This international event is held every November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 1998 was the impetus for the first vigil held in 1999. Rita Hester’s murder, like most anti-transgender murder cases, has yet to be solved. Events will be held across the country, including one at The LGBTQ Center of Long Beach, being held at Harvey Milk Park on 3rd Street and the Promenade starting at 6:30 p.m. This year’s event will feature a reading of names of those lost over the last year as well as a candlelight vigil. For more information, go to facebook.com/ events/898285386856868. May you all enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving

with friends and family. If that’s not in the cards, don’t forget your friends at The LGBTQ Center of Long Beach who extend an open invitation to join them on Thanksgiving day for a wonderful lunch and fellowship. The lunch is free and open to all. For more information, go to centerlb.org.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! JEWELS
