While sitting in the doctor’s waiting room, 8 year old Mariam and her mum see lots of posters with children on them and the word “flu”. Mariam and her mum have some questions:

What is flu? Flu is a

common infection in babies and children and it can be very unpleasant! Flu can cause fever, stuffy nose, coughing, a sore throat, achiness, and can make you very tired.

Why are we protecting children from getting flu? Protecting Mariam, and children like her, from the flu not only protects her but will also reduce the spread of flu to her family, like her grandmother whose immune system doesn’t work as well as it used to, and who could become very poorly if she got flu.

How are children being protected? Children are being protected by having a flu vaccination, which is given as a nasal spray that is painless and easy to have.

When do children need to get vaccinated? To work best, the nasal spray needs to be given between October and December and as strains of flu change every year it’s very important that children are protected for this coming season.

Where can children get the vaccine? Children aged 2 and 3 years old on 31 August 2017 can get a free vaccination at their local GP practice and children in Reception class up to and including Year 4 will be offered the vaccination at school.

Don’t forget, the

vaccination is available free on the NHS.
