Audits to help ensure responsible rodenticide use

P

lans for independent audit- ing of rodenticide steward- ship point of sale checks

have been announced jointly by BASIS Registration and the Cam- paign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CCRU).

When buying professional rat

baits, gamekeepers and farmers as well as professional pest con- trollers must prove they are qual- ifi ed to make the purchase. The move aims to help ensure that ro- denticides are being used correctly. The BASIS Stores Inspection

Scheme – which already uses inde- pendent assessors to ensure com- pliance with regulations for the storage and distribution of profes- sional pesticides – is set to be ex- tended by the two organisations.

Successful regime

The creation of an audit process specifi cally for rodenticides will be signifi cant in ensuring the success of the UK Rodenticide Steward- ship Regime, says Lindsay Smith- Boam, BASIS logistics manager. “Applying controls at the point of sale, such as checking distribution staff are aware of the regulations and best practice requirements, is an important part of steward- ship,” she explains.

Extending the long-estab-

lished stores inspection scheme to cover rodenticides will provide further evidence that the supply chain is controlling availability of these products, helping to ensure continued access to them without further restriction.

The audits will cover sales of professional rodenticides Stewardship

Audits will apply to all supply routes – trade and retail premis- es and internet – with the fi rst au- dit cycle conducted by BASIS be- tween February and November 2018. BASIS will help businesses meet stewardship requirements, says Ms Smith-Boam.

Any company or outlet selling

professional use rodenticides must have passed a BASIS Point of Sale audit for rodenticide stewardship compliance by 30 November, 2018, says CRRU UK point of sale work group leader Rupert Broome. “This is a planned progression from proof of competence checks on rodenticide purchasers, which were rolled out in October 2016.”
