www.mainescoast.com Publisher's Note It is not hard to fi gure out where my
summers go as almost every weekend is taken up by one or two lobster boat races. It was a great season and despite the amount of hours that goes into getting the results tabulated, computer system rebuilt for the next race and the photographs sorted out, it is still enjoyable. It is was also great to have Karen Moody return to help with the Portland races and without her we would not have raised more than $11,000 for the MS Society.

and Portland races I had two days to get the paper done and be ready to attended the Mariner’s Award at the Maine Maritime Museum on Thursday evening. Well getting everything done did not go quite as planned and the paper went to press a day late. I also needed to have a half-hull ready for the auction at the Mariner’s Award dinner. I had started this model several years ago as a present to my sister for her birthday. It was a model of the 135 foot J-boat RANGER, built by BIW in 1937 and the successful defender of the America’s Cup that year. I built the model 1/2-inch to the foot meaning it was almost 68-inches long. Fortunately I had help fi nishing the project. The hull went to BlueJacket Shipcrafters in Searsport to get painted by Al Ross. Eric Dow cut the back board, which was 75 x 19 inches and ¾-inch thick. This was varnished by “The Wife” in the evenings when she was not saving lives at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. The evening before the banquet the model was fi tted to the back board when I realized the I needed a rudder. The morning of the event I was in Searsport after making the rudder to get it painted by Al. Back to Win- terport load everything up and head for Bath where they wanted me at 1500 hrs. so I knew

what I was supposed to at the event. I worried about what the model would go for and put a reserve on it at $1,000. When it came up for auction it did not take but a couple of bids to go over my reserve and it kept climbing fi nally ending at $4,250. This all went for the boatbuilding program at the Museum, which was incredible. The following morn- ing I called my sister and informed her that her model was donated to the Museum and she was more than pleased, especially since I told her another one was underway for her. Now there are three models underway in the shop and hopefully one will be done for next year’s Mariner’s Award banquet. What should one not do on Labor Day? Head south to Portsmouth, NH. I thought it would be fi ne as I was going down Route 1 getting distribution done on the way. Well, I was incorrect and instead of spending a lot of time in traffi c I knew there was a cemetery in Kittery I would like to photograph. There were several sea captains, but it was the last stone that really was interesting. This stone was dedicated to the loss of the brig HATTIE EATON off Gerrish Island on 1876. I was able to quickly look the wreck up in my fi les, but it had not been transcribed. I then headed to the Portsmouth Public Library to get what accounts they had. After transcrib- ing the accounts I was amazed that the one in the Republican Journal from Belfast was the best. I will write this up for the next issue as it is a very interesting, but sad story. Fall is upon us and winter in not far be-
hind. I really hope I can get much more done on my ship research. I also hope that I can get some of it up on line so those interested can get to use it, like I was able to do with HATTIE EATON. I have a long way to go to make it complete, but even in its present state it is pretty useful.
