Note: The illustration of professions was common in Indian miniature painting. This picture follows a standard format, with an image of the worker at his work in the top section and the tools of his trade below. As such it is both a portrayal of rural life in India and also a record of the practises of daily life.

Note: During the 14th and 16th centuries numbers of Kalpasutra, or books of rituals, were produced by monks for wealthy Jains, who commissioned these manuscripts as acts of devotion. They were then stored in libraries attached to the temples of the donors spiritual teachers.
The Kalpasutra, one of two hymns of Jain ritual, describes how at the time of the conception of Mahavira, Indra, the king of Celestial beings, stepped off his throne and recited a song praising the jinas for having obtained liberation and allowing the believer to overcome suffering and death.
The reciting of the Kalpasutra is considered central to the ritual of the paryushana festival celebrated by the Svetambara Jains. £200-300 + 27.6% BP*
