Samskip mounts Viking invasion

Intermodal operator Samskip is to take over Norway-based transport and shipping company Nor Lines. Subject to approval by Norway’s

competition authorities, Samskip has agreed with the DSD Group to acquire the activities of Nor Lines, which generate an average annual turnover of €110 million. The Stavanger-based company runs

domestic and international including

terminals, warehousing and haulage with 170 employees, based in 14 locations throughout Norway. Five of its seven multi- purpose vessels, which maintain services between Norway and continental Europe and along the Norwegian coast will be transferred under a time charter arrangement to Samskip. Samskip will maintain the Nor Lines brand name.

DFDS upgrades sideport and container services

DFDS has enhanced its container and sideport services between Immingham UK, Norway, Germany and Belgium in response to increased demand. From mid-August DFDS direct

and loop sailings will connect Immingham with Hamburg, Zeebrugge, Fredrikstad and Oslo, whilst UK-Norway capacity will be doubled. The Norway port has also been switched from Moss to Fredrikstad to

reach a wider hinterland with fewer road miles. Key enhancements are:

two direct weekly sailings; one between Immingham and Fredrikstad (and vice- versa) and one direct between Immingham and Oslo (and vv); a weekly loop service connecting Immingham, Zeebrugge and Fredrikstad; and a direct container service between Immingham and Hamburg (and vv).

Hutchison-owned London Thamesport has received its first trainload of steel on behalf of the Armitt Group. The logistics firm is developing a logistics terminal at the former deepsea container port, which is now being repurposed as a breakbulk and short sea facility.

Operated by DB Cargo, and

carrying 1,000 tonnes of steel coil from the Tata plant in South Wales, it was the first train to use the Group’s 120,000sq ft specialist handling facility at the port. The steel is not however being shipped – it was due to leave the port by road to customers throughout Europe.

Wincanton to open London Gateway container base

Largest UK logistics company Wincanton is to build a 2.5-acre container haulage base at DP World London Gateway. It will be operational from early 2018. The site will provide truck

parking and office facilities housing an on-site operations team. Wincanton managing director

for industrial and transport, Chris Fenton, said: “We’ve been moving customer containers in and out of DP World London Gateway since it opened, and have seen an increase in our customers’ needs in that location as the site has grown. The location has excellent links to our wider transport

network, and this new facility represents a great opportunity to grow our presence in a key strategic location.” DP World London Gateway

chief executive, Chris Lewis, added: “As

the largest British

logistics company, Wincanton has a vast transport network that spreads throughout the UK, and this new facility will only serve to reinforce that position.” Pentalver Transport has

meanwhile started work on phase two of its container facility at DP World London Gateway Berth Seven, the first phase of which opened in 2015. The second phase will add 40% more capacity.

Transmec to offer daily Italy intermodal route

Transmec Group is to upgrade its UK/Italy service via Zeebrugge to daily, following a €6 million (£5.4m) investment in its intermodal fleet and launching new pan-European rail services,. The transport and logistics

operator is purchasing 160 Huckepack trailers, 100 swap bodies and 40 box containers for moving hanging garments. As well as the enhanced UK/

Italy route, these will serve a new twice-weekly link between Transmec’s private terminal at Oradea and Duisberg in Germany’s Ruhr region and there will be a third weekly service between Oradea and Piacenza, Italy.

Group chief executive, Danilo

Montecchi, said the investment had been driven by increasing demand and growth in the fashion sector with which Transmec has a long-standing association. He added: “Providing direct

connections between eastern, southern, central and northern Europe, our intermodal services offer a compelling alternative to road with differences in transit times of just 24 hours.” In the last year, freight volumes

carried by the company’s trains from Transmec’s own terminal in Romania to Italy and the UK have increased by 33%, while volumes from Italy to the UK and Belgium have increased by 30%.
