// Alex Chalk

unless you get the infrastructure right.” Alex also meets with the Transport Secretary each quarter to keep him on his toes about roads. The A417 sees 30,000 drivers daily and has been the cause of so many deaths each year but there is a promise from Government to begin road works by 2020.

Alex has achieved a huge amount and it is hard to remember he has only been a Member of Parliament for two years. His next crusade is just that – a crusade. He has instigated a Parliamentary inquiry into social media and young people’s health.

“We have witnessed an explosion of adolescent mental health problems. How can we stop it? What is the prevention?” The inquiry into social media and adolescent mental health will take evidence from Young Minds charity and The Children’s Society. It will also hear from young people, psychologists, and teachers and for the first time, Facebook and Instagram.

“The ability for bullying is magnified by social media. I want to look at how we make social media sites safer for under-18s. Parents must be empowered to say to their children - if you

want to go on social media 1) Go on this site for example, because I know it is responsible. 2) There is scientific evidence that you can’t spend more than two hours on it.”

Alex is clear about his focus: “I want Cheltenham to be leading the debate on issues that affect the whole nation. I want this town‘s voice to be heard and our influence to be felt. It deserves a profile and a voice, and I’m doing my best. I want to try my hardest to make the maximum positive impact - and then I can get a proper job again.”

I cannot believe that Alex Chalk has accomplished so much and is still so young. But I’m heartened to know his career progression isn’t driven purely by mad ambition.

“I’d always known I wanted to serve in some way. That’s sounds old-fashioned, quaint but I’m very patriotic. I love this country and I love my constituency. I grew up here and I’m passionate about serving my constituents.” Alex Chalk may be just one of the few people who can be sincere and crusading without making you want to throw up.
