‘Red tide’ alert in Tambobo Bay

The Red Tide alert against shellfish consumption by humans is still up in Tambobo Bay in Siaton, Negros Oriental, pending results of laboratory tests of water and shellfish meat samples. Wilmencita Pialogo, who

heads the Provincial Task Force on Red Tide at the Provincial Agriculturist’s Office, disclosed that they took some water samples again last week but were not able to do an analysis. Pialogo,

a marine

biologist, further disclosed that shellfish meat samples taken from Tambobo Bay last week for bio-assay testing in the central office of the Bureau of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources in Manila was forwarded last week.

According to Pialogo, the collection of shells from Tambobo Bay remains suspended pending the test results. Red tides are caused by an explosive growth and accumulation of certain

microscopic algae, mostly dinoflagellates, in coastal waters.

The BFAR had earlier declared a Red Tide alert about more than a week ago in Tambobo Bay, after higher concentrations of the dinoflagellates were noted. It is something “new”

in the area, not having experienced this kind previously, she added. Pialogo had reported last week that another round of water sampling showed a decline in the Red Tide toxicity, however, it is only the BFAR who can declare the area safe once more for shellfish gathering when the bio-assay results are out. Cars, motorcycles and all types of vehicles can no longer go beyond the speed of 40 kilometers per hour while traversing the city streets, thoroughfares and highways in Dumaguete. Councilor Lilani Ramon has authored an ordinance that shall limit the speed within the territorial jurisdiction of the city at: 40kph when passing the boulevard and 30kph when passing school zones, parks, public market, churches, pedestrian lanes, hospitals and department stores. “There has been an

DFA asks Pinoys abroad: Be vigilant

The Department of Foreign Affairs has called on the more than 10 million overseas Filipinos to heighten their vigilance in the wake of terrorist attacks abroad. The DFA issued the statement after a foiled terrorist

attack in Russia and a deadly shooting incident in Burkina Faso.

“We want our kababayan wherever they are abroad to always remain vigilant, and to always be prepared because these senseless acts of violence can happen anywhere, and when we least expect them,” Foreign Affairs Sec. Alan Peter Cayetano said. Quoting a report from Ambassador Carlos Sorreta of the Philippine Embassy in Moscow, the DFA said Russian intelligence was able to prevent Islamic militants from carrying out a series of terrorist attacks in the country. The terrorist plot reportedly included two suicide attacks. In Ouagadougou, 18 people were killed when Islamic

militants opened fire at a restaurant frequented by foreigners.

alarming and steady increase in traffic accidents on the highways, streets, thoroughfares and roads in Dumaguete City primarily caused by over speeding and reckless driving,” Ramon explains.

She also asserts that existing traffic rules are outdated and no longer suited to the current traffic situation in the city caused by rapid urbanization, which requires renewed vigor in the imposition of speed limit to enhance public safety and peace and order.

Hundreds of pupils and employees of City Hall participate in the drill spearheaded by the Bureau of Fire Protection and the City Rescue Team. At the sound of the alarm (to signal an earthquake or any emergency), all employees and pupils are supposed to evacuate from their offices and classrooms in an orderly fashion to gather at the quadrangle; fire trucks will race infront of the City Hall; rescue vehicles and ambulances get to the scene to help victims from the upper floors (or from a car that crashes into a concrete pole); medical personnel attend to the rescued victims; those severely injured are rushed to the nearest hospital.
