Winner of All-Energy Marine Renewable Energy Investment Challenge
The winner of the All-Energy Marine Renewable Energy Investment Challenge sponsored by Atlantis Resources was announced recently at the end of the plenary session: ‘The effects of Brexit on the renewable and low carbon energy sectors’
Tim Cornelius, Chief Executive of Atlantis Resources had a strong panel of experts to judge the five Investment Challenge finalists: Nick Stamp, Director, Macquarie Capital; Cameron Smith, Partner, Ashurst; Ben Brewerton, Director, FTI Consulting; Jonnie Cox, Managing Director, Cantor Fitzgerald. As Tim was not able to be present, his remarks were read by Judith Patten MBE, Conference Project Director of Reed Exhibitions’ All-Energy:
Wave Hub Ltd has expanded its operations in Wales to support the development of the Pembrokeshire Demonstration Zone
Wave Hub Ltd, the leaseholder for the Pembrokeshire wave energy site, recently recruited Madeline Cowley as its Project Manager to lead on the company’s activities in Wales including the feasibility study recently awarded to Black & Veatch. Madeline is based at Wave Hub Ltd’s new office in Pier House, Pembroke Dock.
LOCAL PRESENCE Wave Hub Ltd’s Managing Director, Claire Gibson, said: “I am delighted to have Madeline as an addition to the team. She brings a wealth of experience in developing renewable energy projects, having worked in this area for the past ten years. We understand how important it is to have a local presence when developing a site such as this and so Madeline is based in our new office in Pembroke Dock. We are also pleased to
have the opportunity to co-locate with other marine energy businesses in Pier House.”
LARGE SCALE FACILITY Madeline said: “I’m excited to be involved in this major new project. It’s an exciting time for Marine Energy in Wales. The feasibility study is the first step towards developing a world leading, large scale marine test facility in Pembrokeshire. This project will be a key element of the development of a marine industry hub in the local area.”
COLLABORATION Project Director of Marine Energy Wales, David Jones, said: “We are delighted to continue our collaborative approach to marine energy in Wales by welcoming Wave Hub in their recently acquired Welsh office. Wave Hub’s extensive
experience in developing and operating test sites will be of huge benefit in progressing the Pembrokeshire Demonstration Zone and is another step forward for the sector in Wales.”
The feasibility study starts this month and the findings will be known early in 2018.

Editor’s note: The Pembrokeshire Demonstration Zone forms part of the Pembroke Dock Marine project to develop a world class centre for marine energy development, fabrication, testing and deployment in Pembrokeshire. This is one of 11 projects included in the Swansea Bay City Deal that was signed by the Prime Minister and Welsh First Minister on 20 March earlier this year.
“After a long deliberation and much vigorous debate, the panel agonised over selecting a winner. We want to thank all of the participants and we will directly contact each of them with detailed feedback from the judges. Joe Hulm, Director, Ocean Energy Advisors pitched a product that the marine industry desperately needs and identified a clear gap in the market; Peter Fraenkel, Director Fraenkel Wright, put forward a compelling case for larger rotor diameter turbines to rapidly reduce LCOE - enabling tidal power to remain competitive with offshore wind; David Carrascosa, Chief Tech Officer, Saitec delivered a very high quality presentation around a very well thought out product with a clearly defined path to test and verify the SATH platform and Graeme Mackie, Founder, Ocean Flow Energy, delivered a highly credible pitch to develop Starflow which the panel believes has a high probability of being commercialised.
“However, there can be only one winner, and this year, the panel selected Joachim Amland from Tidetec from Norway. The panel was impressed by the clearly set out investment proposition, the quality of the business plan and presentation, the realistic valuation and the path set out to commercialisation. The panel will be in contact with Tidetec to set up working sessions in London to build up their business plan to assist them on their future funding rounds.

Tidetec, who presented their tidal lagoon ‘two-way hydropower’ technology, won £10,000-worth of invaluable advice from lawyers, stockbrokers, investment bankers, accountants communications experts and marketeers.
Ghent University has been involved in wave and tidal energy research for over a decade e.g. in the EU framework (e.g. SEEWEC project), the national (e.g. BOREAS project) and the WES (e.g. PST-WEC project) programme.
