STEPHANIE REW

This collection of paintings explores the experience of unconscious dreaming. I am interested in the power of the unspoken conversation, where women can connect and converse without words.

Pattern, colour and texture of textiles and costume are intrinsic to the work, giving the painting a tactile and dramatic element, placing the model in a timeless era.

Theatrical costume has always been an influence in my work, and recently I have collaborated with the Scottish fashion designer Judy R Clark, with her historically inspired couture pieces featuring in my new work. The kimono has been a life- long love and continues to offer me new painting challenges.

My inspirations come from my love of the Japanese wood- cut prints of the Ukiyo-e, as well as the works of Caravaggio, Whistler and Sargent.

Ideas for my paintings usually come to me instinctively as finished images in my mind, this means the work has no distinct narrative.

That, I leave that to the viewer, to create for themselves. Stephanie Rew
