Grotte de Villars cave is a passage into a subterranean world
Astérix’s beefy sidekick. It’s cute, clever and surprisingly fast when it gains momentum! Finally, there’s the behemoth
itself. Disneyland Paris typically pulls in more than 14 million visitors per annum (although tourism has taken a hit since the 2015 terror attacks). There’s no denying its appeal, with sprawls of shops, spas, restaurants and fi tness centres catering to adults, children, non-fans and the devout. There’s also no denying its size – its theme park alone covers 140 acres.

There are around 40 rides in total, including such indomitable favourites as the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ water-based ride and ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril’ rollercoaster. There’s even the chance to explore Sleeping Beauty’s castle, a towering pastel vision tickling the clouds. Undoubted leader in its fi eld, the park manages to keep the magic alive and is bound to enchant.

rock climbing and whitewater kayaking. There’s even a chance to fi sh! Based in Cherveix-Cubas, a small town in the Dordogne, the company carries out water-based activities along the river Auvézère, taking advantage of its energetic gorges and waterfalls. Newcomers have nothing to fear; professional instructors are on hand for training assistance and full safety gear is provided. Whether your outing lasts a few hours, half a day or from morning until evening, taking on fast- fl owing rivers and scaling cliff faces offers an irresistible blend of fresh air and excitement. It’s hardly surprising that the company set up camp here, as the area is brimming with interesting locations and landmarks. Head slightly south and you’ll fi nd the famous Gouffre de Padirac, an extraordinary subterranean cave in the Lot department. It has a long history, remarkably dating as far back as the Hundred Years’ War. According to local legend, this site was originally formed by the devil himself! The cave was offi cially discovered in 1889 by Édouard-Alfred Martel, who eventually opened its doors to the public nine years later. Since then, it’s grown into one of the region’s most popular attractions, pulling in more than 400,000 visitors every year. It’s more a commercial spot than a place for potholing or secret adventures, but it makes a riveting caving encounter nevertheless, complete with an underground boat ride.
