T EXPERIENCE MANITOBA Happy Rock

Happy Rock in Gladstone, MB. Photo by Runran.

here’s nothing better than a nice smile and a wave. If you’ve ever driven along the Yellowhead Route

through Gladstone MB, you’ve no doubt come across a landmark that has never missed a chance to greet anyone who will look. Yes, the Happy Rock. Te first concept of the famous Mani-

toba landmark began in the 1970’s when the provincial government held some brainstorming sessions along with com- munity representatives, trying to find ways to increase local tourism dollars. Gladstone has always been referred

to as "Happy Rock”, so in 1984, the local Chamber of Commerce decided that they needed a mascot to represent the name Happy Rock. A logo contest was held and

Jerry Wickstead, a student from William Morton Collegiate in Gladstone, submit- ted the winning entry. Happy Rock sits 25’ High (the rock itself

is 15’ and the base is 10’) and the base itself would be 17 ½’ wide. Happy Rock was officially opened as a

tourist information center on July 1st 1993 culminating a process that had begun many years prior. Te result was a mascot that conjures up an image of a Happy Rock and one that has become a recognizable landmark for thousands of travelers along the Yellowhead Highway. So the next time you find yourself on the

Yellowhead, make a stop in Gladstone and greet the Happy Rock with a smile and a wave. I guarantee you’ll get one back.
