Jamison clock up for auction

MANY people visiting the National Trust prop- erty Buckland Abbey may recall a fine long- case clock inscribed ‘Bennett Plymouth’ on the dial. This regulator clock has been on loan to The Abbey, from an important clock collection of a West- country family.

Enthusiasts and col- lectors will now have the opportunity to view and to bid for a major part of the collection as they will be coming up for auction in Plymouth in July.

One of three regula- tor clocks in the sale bears the trade plate ‘Bennett, Plymouth’ but was from the workshop of George Jamison. He worked with the cele- brated Devon born, horologist Thomas Mudge. It is the small stamp, G. JAMISON, be- neath the sturdy front plate of this exception- ally fine movement, that adds real horological interest. The ‘Gothic’ ma- hogany case is inlaid with brass stringing. As might be expected the train has both Harrison maintaining power and a dead-beat escapement. (There is a record of a Bennett having a work- shop in Totnes, c 1810.

Being so accurate it would have been the clock from which he would set his own pieces).

The second longcase regulator clock, which dates from the 1840’s, is by Harvey Denton & Co. London. In a top quality mahogany case, the movement also has a dead beat escapement and Harrison maintain- ing power. Other clocks include a very rare, pendulum regulator, bracket clock with a prize remontoire es- capement; inscribed J. Aitken, Fecit, LON- DON, it is in a simple ebonised case. Dating from around 1824, the mechanism is described in the book ‘It’s About Time, Paul Chamberlain, Holland Press, 1964. Pp.185 -186’. An 8 day marine chronometer, the dial inscribed Barrauds’ LONDON, is expected to attract significant inter- est. The gimbaled move- ment, numbered 932, is housed in a brass-bound mahogany case, in un- touched condition. The dial shows a rare state- of-wind aperture and the interior of the case bears a label indicating that it was once main- tained, in Southampton,

for the steamship the ‘Sardonyx’. A similar piece, model number 992, is in the London Science Museum.

The collection also includes fine French, and English, carriage clocks and a Louis XIV, Boulle-cased, bracket clock by Moreau L’Aisné.

Auctioneer Paul

Keen says, ‘We are priv- ileged to handle such

rare timepieces. It is very unusual for such a collection to appear on the provincial market and we are expecting a lot of interest in the sale from local, national and international collec- tors’.

The auction will be

on Wednesday 19th July starting at 11.00am, at Plymouth Auction Rooms.
